my first love is cichlids. now i have american cichlids. But will get africans once i have more tanks
some real good arowanas will always be an aim for me in the future.
i like catfish a lot too, i think they are wonderful fish. some are very very nice.
i like some of the tetras, eg bleeding heart, the lampeye tetra...and dont forget characins dont only include tetras, but monsters like pacus too. Not to mention piranha
the tiger barb is quite special to me..coz childhood memory.
i rather keep 2 big black ranchus than a Luohan in a big tank.
Hi MS !, me keep Loricariidae or suckermouth catfish and some species of characin, cheers ! []

wow seems like there are many different preferences !
i will like to get some emperor tetras, can someone tell me any fish shop that is good to get them or have a good choice of tetras? and also, beside corydoras, what bottom feeder are suitable for a tetra community and can be found here? i am also new to planted tank [:]
also, i read the thread about PL light in the equipment forum and i am interested to go and make it myself.my tank is 36"18x18..how much light do i need if i want to set up a planted tank?
there are many lfs u might wanna visit...
1) tiong bahru market (Ben wong)
2) Rainbow (Serangoon Nth ave2, good select, price is abit higher)
3) H20 (Jln Kembangan)
pls observe the fishes b4 purchasing, sometimes... they may have oredi contracted some dieases.. so watch them.. especially the sensitive ones (cardinal, rummy nose, neon, emperor)
Corydora, do great tank mates for any fishes, other fishes such as loaches and some pleco (Zebra, bristlenose) (beware that not all pleco is suitable for planted tanks as most of them r plant eaters)
as for yr lighting queries, u have a 3x1.5x1.5ft.. provide at least 1.5watts per gallon for low light plants (echinodorus, crypto, nana) or 3.0watts per gal for high lighted plants (stemmed plants, riccia, glosso)
Simon, have a qn.
Different kind of lamps have different light output per Watt.
so isnt it inaccurate to measure by watts instead of other units like lumen, which indicate the eventual light output?
hi lsz
i think what simon meant is the intensity of the light producted at a given wattage. The kelvins are just a layman terms of the color spectrum that the bulb products....be it warm white to full daylight.
Intensity, which is measured in lumens (should be more accurate than wattage) if not wrong, is important as it determines how deep the light is able to penetrate in a given height of water.

thats the general rule of the thumb.. we oso have to consider the different tubes (FL,PL,MH,MV) different light source, color temp oso plays a part... but if its FL/PL then no prob with it..----------------
