Usually high N will and low P with high light will cause that. While u blackout, no dosing of fert.
Can anyone tell me the cause of greenwater algae? How do you prevent it. And also, during a blackout, do you dose ferts?

Nitrogen...depends on the type. Nitrate even in high amount doesn't cause that but ammonia even in relatively low amount will. Phosphate does not contribute anything nor is it related to this algae.Originally Posted by Sleepy_lancs

Ammonia is the trigger to greenwater.Originally Posted by turtlehead
Plant heavily, take care of the plants needs (CO2, NO3, PO4, K, traces, GH(Ca/Mg)) and low to moderate stocking of critters will prevent that. Always do large water changes will uprooting plants or whenever you stir up the substrate.
Don't need to during the blackout.

Think my tank's having something similar to yours. Changed bio-media + new fishes. So im guessing bacteria bloom, followed by the excess ammonia causing green water, creating our super-cloudy water hehe. My fishes doesnt seem affected though.Originally Posted by turtlehead

The most efficient way for removing green water is using UV light. Loan/rent one from a friend what so ever, it should all go in 3-4 days time.Originally Posted by turtlehead

I don't see any problem, just run a small filter to push the water into the UVC (you know how it looks like, right?), and make a return flow.Originally Posted by turtlehead
What would the price be like, for the cheapest UVC?Originally Posted by Goondoo
I think its near $100, can't really remember the price.Originally Posted by kniveswood
You won't really need one for one. Loan/rent it will be a more economical option.
No lfs will do that I live in america...

Bought Azoo Green Water Remover. Not sure if u can find it in America, but will update with results.
So here are my results so far:
5th April night: Dosed 6ml of Azoo Green Water Remover instead of the recommended 7ml (For 70l of water)
6th April night: Water still looks cloudy and slight greenish. Added another 5ml of Azoo. Although bottle says it's ok to dose again in 24hr, to be safe i did 30% water change 1 hour later. Water looks much clearer after water change, though not crystal clear but very acceptable. Fishes all look fine to me.
My tank:
2ft tank
Atman hang-on-back filter + air stone
6 juvenile angels
1 adult angel
4 threadfin rainbows
2 siamese algae eaters
So it seems to be working for my setup. Will update if the green cloudiness comes back.

7th April night: By my standard, i consider my tank now crystal clear! I believe bb has taken over the greenwater's duty in converting ammonia/nitrite. I also believe my Nutrafin Cycle helps too.
8th April night: Still crystal clear!
I'm on my 3rd day of blackout running diatom.
