Gan, just some quick pix. Trying to get some better ones.
look what I found at a bus stop at Bukit Merah, yet again! A bag containing a pair of Austrolebias nigripinnis Nueva Palmira!

Err.. Choy I think you mispelt Nueva as Neuva in the thread title.
Anyway, here's the location map for Nueva Palmira, Colonia, Uruguay.

Choy,
The fish can be darker in body colour when relaxed in planted tank. Ask him to have its tail straighten !. Do you still have pictures of Aust. ngripinnis of other location? Need to compare the diferences. Think this has a lighter shade of blue if I'm not wrong.
Gan, will be trying more tonight. No this is the only Austrolebias I have.

Hmm.. this population seems to be quite less spotted than others like those from Ibicuisito and Carmelo.
Each nigripinnis population differs in terms of intensity of basic body colouration, degree of spotting and intensity of spots.

this is rather hard to assess as you know colours and intensity looks different under "natural light" vs aquarium/room lights.Originally Posted by stormhawk

Its quite simple actually if you have other nigripinnis from the other populations. A fellow breeder from Spain agrees with my assumption and he has collected them in the field with Heber Salvia, an Austrolebias expert and collector from Uruguay.
By the way, the location Carmelo is shown on the same map in the link I posted earlier for Nueva Palmira. Slightly to the south of Nueva Palmira.

so what state is Nueva Palmira in? from the map it seems to be Colonia or Buenos Aires.

The state of Colonia, Uruguay. Close to the border with the state of Soriano, Uruguay.

By the way, I just recalled something, the Uruguayans don't call them states but rather Departments or in Spanish, Departamento.
So its Departamento Colonia.
But to be exact, just put the location data as Nueva Palmira, Colonia, Uruguay.

what's that Buenos Aires I see on the map?

Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, is located across the Rio Uruguay estuary from Nueva Palmira. Thats why it appears on the same map in the link I posted. Oddly enough they didn't show the demarcation of the border clearly.

This is my favorite fish but i have'nt females. I think little bit different.
Regards,
It looks similar to S.Chacoensis. Any relationship?
KeeHoe.
Hi Kee Hoe,
I found them to be similar looking as well.
Simp. chacoensis is a species that hails from the Paraguayan Chaco. It may have probably been the link in evolution between the smaller Austrolebias like Austrolebias nigripinnis and the Simpsonichthys species.
Again this is just a thought of mine.
To sum it all up, Simp. chacoensis looks like a larger version of Austrolebias nigripinnis and vice versa.

a terrible thing has happened! after a 30% water change yesterday, I found both fish dead

Choy,
Don't worry about it. Both of them had already done their 'duty' & expected to expire sooner or later. Being a model was their unexpected call. They're suppose to retire to their planted home, & spend their last days chasing oxygen bubbles..
Wait for the next generation in 4 months time perhaps?
