This is my first experience with any Austrolebias species. Fish were sexable two weeks after hatching. Males colored up at three weeks. Fish began to spawn at four weeks. This is the fastest maturing annual I have raised. These fish remain less than 1" in length now at five weeks old. Does anyone else have similar experiences with this or other species developing so quickly?

Thanks for your input. Happy killie keeping.

I'm not surprised by the fast development. You probably look after your fish very well.

This species does not get very big, so having them spawn at this size if not odd at all.

Thank you for the reply, Tyrone. The fish continue to grow but at a slower rate. The males are probably 1" now. The spawning also continues, and the females are very full of eggs each morning. I think I will dry and replace the peat in the breeding bowl this weekend.

I replaced the peat after 13 days of spawning and found numerous eggs (I usually can't find any eggs when I collect peat from other species). I am hoping for a large hatch in a few months .

These little fish are quickly becoming one of my favorites. There are very active and not shy. I was finally able to get a picture of the dominant male flaring under the light. As you can see, he is quite stunning.

You right, that is a very handsome fellow.

If you ever need to pass on some of his kids, I'm sure I can find a home for them.:-)

    Ivan,

Glad to hear your Megalebias are doing well. From what I understand, the Austrolebias are one of the prey items of your fish . No wonder they have to mature and spawn so quickly.

    Exactly!!!!!

the prey items of my fish are Austrolebias, Megalebias, Simpsonichthys and some Nothobranchius.
