I personally think they grow faster when they are submerged.

Marsel, I have a few simple mini paludarium/terrarium and will shoot some pics when I get my hands on a digicam. One condition though. Don't ask me what's growing emersed on the driftwood because I have no idea. I know it's just moss and pellia (sp?), and they grow faster emerged.Originally Posted by Mars

On what do these mosses grow? wood, rock?
I put some x-mass moss into the plastic cup with low level of water , cover with see trough lid... I hope it will start to grow emersed because once my moss attached to a filter pipe that was coming out of water and started growing emersed
Sorry for my bad English

Marsel, the mosses grew better on wood than on rocks.
BTW, when I deleted the other bogus accounts, some posts were lost including those from our Finland friend. Feel free to repost, if necessary.
Kwek Leong, there wasn't a work-about. Apologies.

That's it? Nobody else is growing mosses emersed?
Ron we are waiting photos...

I find that they do tend to grow faster when i cultivate them emersed.
The most effective method i have used is to fill a tank or even a plastic tub with 2" water then cut a plastic pipe into 2.5" segments which can be placed on the floor of the tank, a sheet of eggcrate cut to a size slightly smaller than the floor of the tank is then supported half an inch above the waters surface on these sections of pipe.
Sit an ultrasonic humidifier in the water and then add a layer of capillary matting on top of the eggcrate, spread your moss thinly over this layer and provide plenty of light. you may also add tiny quantities of an appropriate fertilizer to the water.
This allows the moss to grow emersed but keeps it extremely moist all the time. Some adaptation will also allow you to grow some of your other plants aeroponically in this system.

I've grown/am growing approximately 35 different species of moss.
All are grown emersed.
only problem growing emersed is if Algae is allowed to grow in the moss. It can be a pain to remove.
You have to be hard, throw away what is infected, or have a top tuned algae crew in a tank where you can clean the moss. But as always, be careful with crosscontamination.
No fun in 35 species growing in 1 mashup!
Kindest Regards,
Martin
'Tis a great world underneath the sea'
Martin can you post some photos please.. I would really like to see how those mosses look like...
Do you grow them on sunlight?
I tried it with Taiwan moss mini pellia and downoi
So far : good result with Taiwan moss and downoi
The mini pellia didn't survived

I have had the same experience with Riccardia Eyal, it seems this species will only grow aquatically, i thought perhaps the air temperature was too low when i attempted to grow it emersed too although in a small volume of water an ultrasonic humidifier tends to generate a decent amount of heat so i think it's unlikely.
kind regards,

I think the Riccardia needs long acclimation between submerse form to emersed
I plan trying again this time : to put it on a mesh near water surface and from time to time to add water
I'll keep you posted
