Internal Filter Failed , now on back-up external filter

Hi All , my Internal Powerhead just failed.

Its a lucky thing that i have another filter which is external and have been running for quite some time. I would think that filter would be able to cope with the breaking down of the ammonia and stuff.

I have a question , do i remove the filter material from my internal filter while i get the powerhead checked out or do i leave it in the water?

squeese some of it into the external filter , think the bacteria in the sponge can help out in the external filter
