How tall is your tank and which filter are you using?

I think if both your tank and your filter is sitting on the same surface, you should not have a problem. Anyway, the Ehiem instructions indicate the height difference requirement, so given the info, maybe someone here can look up their manual. The water level must definitely be higher then the top of the filter. I think by 10cm minimum if my memory serves me right.

hi benny sure looks like it

its probably sucking in lots of air coz your hoses may be too high from the inlet pipe.....

If the filter is sucking in air, it definately not good for theparts inside. But don't worry, it won't be a major problem if you're worried that it will damage the filter.

Benetay, no worries. I have a Ehiem sitting on the same level as my 1.5 foot height tank. Only problem is getting it started. You have to hold it lower then the tank bottom, prime it, start it up, then put it back where you want it. I am assuming that the water level will be close to the tank top.

bene i am doing it myself.

however, for lower tanks, i will use only the classic series, because the water intake for the filter is right at the bottom of the filter.

if you have something like the pro series, where the inlet is at the top, you may not have enough height difference to get the proper siphon into the intake.

so for low tanks, i stick solely to 2217.
and also, the J shape inlet tube, i put it the other way round, so that the intake is high instead of near the bottom. This is to maximise the height difference of the intake siphon, which is important.
