what lighting you using ?
should be very hardy java moss ... you can trim away the brown parts ... but for me im too lazy just leave them there
i have a golf ball size of java moss in my tank and to me it looks like it is dieing and not growing (no leaves growing on them and only certian parts have it). i have red cherry shrimp in my tank aswell and i dont know if they are eating it or not. i add seachem flourish and excel once a week. i originally try to make a wall but it wasnt growing so i took it apart. should i move the plant to the top so it can get direct light? or are those just dead and need to be toss out?

i only have a 15 watt one in a 16g bow front tank. i never upgraded it when i bought it.
15watts in 16g ? 16 gallons ? Though mosses is a low light requirement plant but your setup might be very low tech, so growth of mosses will be slow. There isnt a need to dose both flourish or excel.
But 1 thing is for sure. Shrimps do feed on mosses when they are hungry.
yeah it is a tall bow front tank so i gues that i where it gets the extra 1g from. i feed my shrimp veggie flake ocnce a day and spinach once every week. i do see them picking at it though. i might have to take it out ad let it grow first.
Mine is a 2.5g with 11w lighting. No co2 or excel added but moss is growing very well.
