Mid of December 2008, it rained non stop for almost a week! On the day when I left my home to middle part of Sungai Kapuas of Indonesian Borneo, I saw the beautiful & warm sun after crossing the border!!! It was a beginning of my survey trip in Kalimantan Barat.
Middle part of sungai Kapuas. Water level is very high during this rainy season.

My friends & I spent 2 days driving around (700km) in the middle part of Kapuas river basin to find habitat for some fishes and plants. The weather was perfect when we're there. Around noon time, we took our lunch at a coffee shop & met our local guide.
A street in Kalimantan Barat.
We come to visit this pet shop to gather information:
Our guide bring us to his house & show us one of his pets; a slow loris (Nycticebus coucang).
A Javanese peacock from Java (Pavo muticus). Unlike its relative from India & Sri Langka (Pavo cristatus), the female of Javanese peacock is as colourful as a male!
Orchid, Dendrobium sanguinolentum ??
Then, our guide showed us a tributary of Kapuas river which used to have a lot of green arowana but now no more because some locals used akar tuba (Either Derris trifoliata or D. elliptica) to poison the fish & shrimp so that they can collected them easily without using the conventional fishing method.

Then, we went to a small stream but we couldn't find the fish that we're looking for. Apparently, the information that we gathered was invalid.
The rocky riverbed.
This is one of the most common fishes from western Borneo, Rasbora sarawakensis.
Hoya & Club moss.

Before dark, we managed to visit a small nursery which got a lot of interesting plants....some of them are endemic to Kalimantan Barat!
Nepenthes clipeata !!! This pitcher plant is endemic to Kalimantan Barat!!!
The pitcher is growing from a tendril on the underside of the leaf.
Very beautiful pitcher of Nepenthes clipeata !!!

A natural cross hybrid of pitcher plant:
Alocasia regina , endemic to Kalimantan Barat too!!!
Slipper orchid, Paphiopedilum hookerae
Phalaenopsis sp. (orchid)
On the way back to our hotel, our guide told us the story of civil war between Madurese & Dayak in Borneo. The story was horrible, so I prefer not to write it out. If you want to know, check out this link:

Driving across the Kapuas river by using bridge.
A small town near Sungai Kapuas.
Our heavy breakfast : giant freshwater shrimp (Udang Galah) & chickem meat.
Dried & salted fish (fish caught from Kapuas river):
Fish for sale. Most of the fishes sold in the market are freshwater fish, very hard to find saltwater fish from the sea.

A stream near roadside:
Found aquatic plant, Crypt. striolata.
Before going home, we checked one more stream. It's a blackwater stream in a peat swamp forest.

I almost wanted to fall down into water when I found this Kapuas Halfbeak or red-striped halfbeak (Hemirhamphodon kapuasensis) !!! It's so beautiful! Endemic to Kalimantan!
Other fishes found but most of them are unidentified such as juvenile Betta, Parosphromenus & lots more.
Nepenthes ampullaria from the peat swamp forest.
Kapuas river is indeed the "Amazon" river of Borneo. There are so many beautiful freshwater fishes living here.... to me, it's an underwater paradise on earth!
