qicheng, dun worry too much about the otos. They're not attacking your discus, just thought its's some surface they'd clean up. won't harm your discus one bit.

    nice pics, BTW

They are feeding on the slime on discus' body. Suggest you don't encourage this behaviour as the Discus will get pretty stressed.

i've been "cleaned up" by the otos before, while doing maintanece, and its not painful at all, ticklish in fact...i'd agree with sherchoo that they wont hurt them, but stress them...imagine minding your own business and then get "sucked" by another fish..

the slime are used to feed the frys, aint that right?

very interesting photos! i could imagine myself right there in the tank!

I bet the discus hate it every bit. I too had the same problem and so I banished that Oto to an Apisto tank. Some CAE also behave this way to discus.

The slime is the protection layer of the fish against external bacterias/parasites. Once there is "hole" in this layer, the host is more susceptible to diseases etc. Can lead to other problems. I once had a whole tank of gold fish having open body wounds. Why? Becoz I was stupid enough to keep a pleco with them. The pleco simply feed on the slime of the gold fish every night when the lights are off.... Over time, the oto will do the same thing to the discus... better remove him from the tank.

Abit off topic. Try the search function a read back post about alage eaters first. I'm sure there's info on that. If not, you can start another topic on this subject.
    Cheers!!
