i've been having trouble growing my HC for a month now coz they all eventually turn brownish and die. i've read that some tried growing their HC emersed and have been successful..
is it better to grow HC emersed or not? any tips on how to get them grow faster? i just started my nano tank last november.

suggest to grow emerse, try them my self with success.
emerse is much easier it seems..
i heard rumors HC was orginally a land plant making it strive better out of water...
but i am currently growing them submerse
its gonna take a long time and more hard work to get them to adapt..
next project to go emerse for me
Hi bros, seems like HC is very popular among aquascaping. May I know what is the common name for HC. Do LFS sell them? What are the condition requirements for HC? Thanks in advance.
With Humble Regards,
MartinTing
common name is HC, scientific name Hemianthus callitrichoides 'cuba'
I'm growing it emersed too. But just started 2 days ago. Will see how fast, or slow it will grow.
Agree with robert, emmersed form has a higher chance of success. But I grew them for 3-4 months before I flooded the tank. You can check my 1FT Nano HC links in my signature.
I grem them about one month, but 110W for 2x1x1.2 ft tank
Its a emerse, so no need to worry about algae, put as much as light as possible
of course not, plant also need to sleep. I turn on 8.30am to 6.30pm. If you happen to read AquaJournal online article on the light, plants seems to stop photosynthesis after 10 hours even though the light still on.
In my opinion CO2 is part of the helping element to convert HC from emerse to submerse. I fail growing HC emerse twice, it melt 1 week after fill in the water. I do not pump CO2 and use excel instead because it is in small tank 30x16x18cm. The third try is using 2ft tank and CO2 injection way about 30ppm. My drop checker show yellow. First 1 month no fish so it is ok overdose CO2.
There are lots of CO2 in the atmosphere, no need to worry about CO2
emersed for me... grows much better as compared to my submersed attempts... its much easier to maintain afterward too...
To be... Rather than seem...
what is emersed and sudmersed?i planing to plant HC too.which is better to cover the bay of the tank?
emerse = only its root under water
submerse = everything under water
been tryin to grow hc in my 422 but seem the roots cant hold to the soil..
are you trying submerse or emerse?
Hi,
This is timely!! I was reading Tom Barr's method of "Dry Starting" a tank. Meaning growing the foreground plants before adding water and the background plants. However, I have a few questions regarding this.
1. By foreground plant, does it mean crypts as well?
2. For plants that requires lower temperature (For example japanese hairgrass etc.), will this method work? I mean we cannot use a chiller with a dry tank.
Thank you so much and sorry for slightly straying from the original posting.
Crypts should work well with DSM. After all, they are found growing emersed in a lot of jungle streams, right?
Yecch!
