    i understand that the most common way of planting this moss is to tie them onto mesh. however this can lead to a very squarish and unnatural scape.

    i'm wondering whether we can plant each fronds directly into the substrate? and grow them under minimal flow? has anybody tried it this way to create a USF lawn? thanks!

    I don't think this is possible. Normally, moss is tied to mesh, driftwood or an object. They will grow very nicely. If you are to buy those young one, they will simply be "flying" around your tank after some agitation from the filter's outlet.
