Birds from The Singapore Botanical Gardens

Hi everyone,
Have been seeing beautiful shots of birds from everyone, and thought I should also try and contribute a little... Albeit my pics are a little dated...
Please feel free to add to this thread. We should also start threads for birds shot in other different areas as well, so that it can help people who are looking for specific birds.

This is a shot of a Coppersmith Barbet spotted at SBG, digging a hole in the tree for a nest. It was high up a thin tree, and the sun was extremely bright that day, and directly against my location and about 30 metres up. Add to that, this was captured with my Olympus 5060 coupled to a Swarovski AT 80HD spotting scope.

Nice catch. The babet is very nice, hard to shoot at such height and against the sun too.
Can see more details on the stock billed. Is it difficult to shoot thru a spotting scope?
Last weekend was my first successful trip to SBG and was surprise to see so many birds there.

Hi Richard,
Yes. Shooting through a spotting scope can be time consuming, in particular, shooting moving birds is almost impossible. The good thing about the spotting scope is that it allows you to be extremely far away from the subject. My scope gave me 20 to 60 x zoom, and my Olympus camedia &/or Coolpix gave me another 12x. I'm not sure how that converts to mm, but it sure as hell is damn far, much further than my 400mm L lens could ever reach. A friend told me once it was over a thousand mm, but I can't be sure.

SBG is simply the BEST one location to get many species. Many people think its also because of the adjacent plot of secondary forest next to the SBG, which belongs to the Sultan of Johore. These two plots together provides a large enough sanctuary for the birds to rest, in particular the migratory birds during this season.

Better go catch them, or they will all be gone soon, and you have to wait until the end of the year to see them again.

Try and get the red legged crake. Quite rare, but it appears at a certain stream every evening for it's bath!

I spotted the crake last Sat, but too many people around that guy refuse to come out.
Waited for the orange too, but didn't come out till about 7pm. I left about 6pm so missed it. Will try again this weekend.

Ha ha ha... long time ago. Strangely, when I was younger, wasn't interested in photography. Only found interest in recent years.

It's not strange, my brother has a studio too, but I haven't set foot in it for years,
no interest too. Only last year that I decided to take up photography.

Next Saturday morning (14th Feb) 7:30am at SBG visitor centre (Where Nature's Niche used to be) I think we can spend 2 hours there. Will bring my kids too.... They can feed ducks at symphony lake, and we go take kingfishers, whistling ducks and sparrows?
