Went to a small stream at the north eastern part of Singapore this afternoon with my kids and a niece. Not nature reserve hor...

This stream had a constant stream of water gushing out, and this portion of the stream was well aerated, and about close to a metre deep. Lots of guppies swimming in it. Tasted the water.... it was salty... brackish water.

I rigged up a fish trap using a 1.5 litre mineral water bottle, put some bread in it, and put the trap in the water.

Caught 1 fish, but when I threw the trap into the water for a second round, the raffia string snapped, and our trap drifted away....

In the end, we only brought home one female guppy....But we all had a lot of fun, and the next time we go, We'll bring a net. it'll be easier!!!

Wow bro, you tasted the water!! very brave of you :P

I remember my dad telling me that when he went long kang fishing when younger, he could never catch the male guppies as they were too fast... He could only get the clumsier female fishes... however, the females soon gave birth to multiple colourful males... So the same thing might just happen to you...

That fish is most definatly not a guppy, possibly a limia.
Currently keeping many wild betta species and other anabantoids.

It's sad we are lacking such great outdoor activites with the modernisation of singapore. gone were the days of kids playing marble and catching spiders...now replaced by ps3 & xbox.

so it's a great pleasure reading about your outing.

If you really enjoy this, you could plan and drive into Malaysia, the fishes that can be caught in the drains (be it road side or within the plantations) there are much more interesting (i.e. wild bettas, boraras maculata, rasbora einthovenii, etc).

Beware of leeches too, wearing long pants with socks pulled over the pants + a pair of waterproof high boots (the type which fishmongers wear)should be good enough a protection.

Bring along a big net but make sure the holes are not too big or the small fishes like boraras will just slip through.

If you see puddles of waters beside a stream with leaf litters at the base of the puddles, I guarantee you that you will be able to catch wild bettas beneath the leaf litters.

My blog is more on cryptocorynes, for fishes, you could visit one of these website for reference:

    Ibanorum

    Have fun!
