You need to provide more details. Photos even better.

We cannot advice properly unless we know things like how big the upper tier tank is, what type of stand you are using, whether the stand was designed to support two tanks in the first place.

One concern: If the tanks are big, you may have floor loading issues.

I'm curious why planted tank in particular? What are your specific concerns about planted tanks being in the lower tier.

I can think of a few reasons why you should not have a planted tank in the lower tier (assuming your stand can support a tank in the lower tier):
    - Heat from the lights could heat up the tank above. Might seem negligible, but I imagine it could raise temperatures by about half to 2 centigrades.
    - Due to small (assumed) space between upper tier and lower tank, there may be heat trapped in the space which will probably affect the lower tank.
    - Same lack of space may make it difficult for you to perform routine maintenance.
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.

er.. if you want just planted tank, I think should be ok. but if you want it to be aquascaping, then you might have the problem that vinz mention. You probably can't even fit nice driftwood or big rock inside. It is a matter of how much distance between the top of the tank and the bottom of 2 top rack

Re: Planted tank at lower tier

I have a 4 tier rack and my planted tanks are in the 1st and 2nd tier from the bottom.
find that doing scaping or planting in these 2 tiers quite tiring..
cannot see from the top, just peep... other then that I am ok with it. one is sit on a chair and do planting , the other is sit on the floor to do planting.

the spacing between the 2 tier is quite high no problem of space... like i say the stand is 422 and if put the 3ft above will be quite odd so i place it at the bottom tier and the 422 tank remain on top.

There are load restrictions for HDB. You should read this if you are living in a HDB flat.

If you are living in hi-rise, then you should read it too, just to understand the concerns and issues.
