Might be getting a 2nd hand 6 ft tank from friend for FREE.

BUT, need to consider cost before accept the free gift.

If used for planted tank :

    a) What Eheim series model is recommended? 1 filter enough?

    b) Lighting wise, might need to go for MH. Is one unit sufficient?

What is the typical cost for the above.

If too expensive, might just do a "Fish only" setup

Thks in advance for the response.

i cannot really advice you on lighting, but say if you want to have a planted tank, and you want a canister, i can think of something like a 2228/2028 bare minimum. there are bigger models like the older 2250, 2260 ("pond filters") .

it all depends on your fish stock and your setup..

and even for lighting, it will depend on your plant type and what kind of planted tank .

you mentioned something about your consideration abt cost of lighting for planted tank.
the irony is that with a "fish only" setup, you may have to spend more on filtration than for say a planted.(possibility of larger fish, and higher fish stock) so you see, there is a balance of manyt factors.

it will be good if you can provide some ideas you have in mind so the best combi can be found

    hi small fish

for a six feet tank, you will need a minimum of a 2228 or a 2028 ehiem series..as for the lights, a single 150watts MH may not be enuff...you will need 2. The cost of a 2228 or 2028 will be estimated at 300bucks and a single MH should be around 280 to 300 bucks as well.

either which way, there is no escaping for the filter as for the lights...well for a fish only tank, you will need lights as well...if the fish only tank is the direction where you are going, you may consider an malawi tank

yeah, use MH... prices have dropped alot compared to when I started my 6ft... get 2 pendant MH and yr plants will love u

as for filteration, best to run 2 filters... becoz one filter aint strong enuff to circulate the whole 6ft length

    yup,
I'm using a 2260. I'm very contented with it with its perfomance and I dun need to clean it that often because it takes in a shitload of filter media.
I have 6 5" pacu fishes in there, so if you are planning to have smaller fishes, you can be sure that the 2260 will serve you until kingdom comes.

Agree with you... Better to get 2 smaller capacity filters and align each at one end for better circulation....
Also put 2 diffusers (use the ADA beetle type!!!) at each end near your filter outlet to get the CO2 circulated at the shortest amt of time....

BTW, how much does a MH light with stand cost har?
