My newly setup tank has got white hairy stuff growing on top of the CO2 difusser tube.

Some of my shrimps died and also have this white coat on them.
Any idea what is it? and what cause the growth?
    I am using DIY CO2.

Try to pass the CO2 thru a 2nd bottle of water to clean it a bit before output to tank. This would solve the slimy problem on the tube. The 2nd bottle can serve as bubble counter too.

Your dead shrimp having slimy coating shd be another natural decaying process and not due to using DIY CO2, I believe.

Does using a bubble counter instead of a 2nd bottle help?

It depends... if your DIY solution does a massive overflow, a tiny bubble counter won't help much.

Have been changing 50% of water every other day..
    still lots of algae growth!
Juz added 3 otos, 3 yamatoes and 1 SAE yesterday nite..
And guess what.. the SAE juz died!! was swimming ok in the morning and then suddenly swim vertical and died!
    Strange!!
The otos are working on the some of the algae..
But the yamatoes seems to be idling.. and keeping going after my Malayan shrimps!
oh ya.. I also notice that there are growing number of small snails in my tank..
Have two that came with the plants and thot its good to have them in the tank to help with algae control..
but now seem to multiply alot.. any problem with that??
My tank is only 2 weeks old.. got to clean up the filter already??[:0]

    Friend,
Don't think your tank is cycled yet... adding so many fish and prawns of cos die... go get test kit for ammonia and nitrite... both also poison to fish... about the algaes... maybe too much lights, too little CO2...
Is your your tank heavily planted?

Give more details of your tank so as the seniors(me not) can help you easier. For snail, next time then settle lor...
    Cheers and Regards,

Cosmos, is your SAE showing any symptoms of CO2 poisioning before dying (gasping of air near the water surface)? Do water changes are good but make sure that the KH level is at least 2dkH by adding baking soda or KH plus stuff before injecting CO2 (to prevent possible risk of pH crash...DIY does cause pH crash as I have experience it before)[]

SAE did not grasp for air leh. Just swim vertical and died!
The last time I measured the PH was 7.
Dun have other test kits, so dun know what the level of KH.

I've got all sorts of algae growing. Spot algae , hairly algae on plants and also brown algae on the glass panes.
