Anyone out there trying their own food recipe for their apistos? I might be trying mine soon after i get the necessary utensils. Primary goals are to achieve brighter colours, prevention of internal bacteria & promotion of spawning. If it works, will share with you guys.

Any insights as to whichever extra ingredients i should add, please let me know!

I'm using the multivit powder from a famous discus breeder in singapore, mixed with beefheart and plan to add astaxanthin, as well as some green peas and carrots into the blend as well. I take a flat piece of forcep to pinch small pieces before feeding my apistos. They love eat!
My rams reward me with new spawns weekly. And they do that while growing, to boot!

Sounds damn delicious la, feed your apistos beefheart. Is it too "nutritious" for them?

Marle, if u make yr own food, pls do share with us how u make it and the recipe.

Adding in minerals, a good source will be bioearth, claimed to consist of 60 over minerals and edible.

Garlic/ alicin, which NLS theraA used to combat internal parasite.

astaxanthin - for red color spectrum ?

spirulina - broader color spectrum, especially blue green ?

How to bind the stuff together and still accept by the fish (if we not using beef heart) ? gelatine ? Agar agar ?

    Final product expensive to make.

Cool. Thanks for the input. I expect a few failures first until the correct recipe is done. Most proabably using gelatine to gel them. Spirulina, yes. Astaxanthin, should be in too, but through natrual sources. Astaxathin does brings about a major benefit being a powerful antioxidant; more capable than other carotenoids.

One major worry, hoepfully the final product does not cloud the water as apistos is prone to bacteria and slight overfeeding of DIY food might lead to enhanced bacteria colonization.

Great source of Astaxathin -->> http://www.astafactor.com/algae.htm

If you guys know Au, Killifish pro, he makes his own food too, some of the ingredients not seen in Singapore lfs. Great effort.

Yeah, I find that sometimes their stomach is still big even 1 day after feeding them beefheart. If that is the case, I stop feeding for a day and commence again when they are back to normal. I alternate with NLS thera A+.

Am getting some new food called colour extreme from Canada through a friend. Hope it will enhance the color of my apistos!

    Re: Your Favourite Apistogramma!

Wow making your own food which your fishes love certainly adds to the fun of fishkeeping.

For those who find it a hassle, I find that feeding NLS pellets is quite enough.
The high amount of garlic in NLS pellets prevent internal bacteria. A year or 2 ago I had an Apistogramma baenschi male which was had sunken belly. By feeding it the thera A formula it managed to recover completely.
Spawning wise I fed a pair of A.diplos solely on NLS and they managed to breed successfully.
Colour wise I do notice a slight improvement but maybe not that obvious.

Yeah! It certainly adds to the fun of it! Lets all make fish food and we can exchange our food.

Bought a packet of ADA AP2 to let the fishes try. They love it! In fact, i think it smells like seaweed. I like it too.

Wow, nice fishes. 4 feet tank is quite a heaven for them. My fishes are in approximately 1 feet, guess your fishes will definitely outgrow mine in terms of full adult sizes.

Updates for the DIY food. The gelatin part is really tricky, i dont know how much i should put to obtain the desired effect. Hopefully trial and error works. The mix is solidifying in my fridge now.

Great Breitbinden picture, Marle. I wish I could catch mine in all their flaring glory!
Good luck in your endeavor. I'll need some females of your F1 later. All 11 pcs of mine turned out to be male.
