    Hi,
I discovered colonies of bell animalcules in an empty tank at the weekend and decided to photograph them. I´m actually looking for a very good microscope, but since I do not have it yet I had to use my macro stuff.

For artistic reasons, I like the first photo better. It shows the ciliates on a single hair algue at about 6.3:1 magnification. For the second photo I used a different setup, here we have more than 10:1, which means less then 2mm real live size on an APS-C sensor. Therefore one can see more details like on the first one. Many thanks to Benny for his great support getting that close!

By the way, on closer inspection you will see Stentor on the first photo as well.

    great shot! what's this creature?

oh and by the way, the answer is Forty Two.
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

Hi, most probably these ciliates belong to Vorticella: http://www.microscope-microscope.org...ciliophora.htm.

And well, I do know that the answer is 42, but what is the exact question? ;-)

(I made a typo in the head line, it should be "colony")
