not much of a difference
saw this in one of the websites.. anyone has any comments with regards to a planted tank. Will this pattern affect the 'health' of plants?
"A successful lighting pattern could be a morning period of 4-5 hours light, followed by a dark phase of another 4-5 hours then a further 5-7 hour lighting period. During the "dark phase", the aquarium should never be in complete darkness but should receive some ambient light such as afforded by a window. Plants apparently enjoy these "siesta" periods and suffer no adverse effects, perhaps this period is representative of the storms that occur frequently in the tropics, where as algae loathe them."

scang,
the website you saw was probably dennerle's... I started off using dennerle products, and as such thought it best to follow their advice on light... it worked well. Even today when I use non-dennerle stuff, my lighting regime is similar... I use a 5-4-6 formula... This helps also as your lights are on when you are home.

I think there has been mixed views regarding this.
But personally, when I matched my lightings with the actual daylight, my stem plants are less leggy (shorter internodes).
My tank receive some weak sunlight through the window. So I think when the plants is "woken up" by the sunlight, they perceive that the light in not enough and need to stretch toward the light.
Just some observations.

I agree with bclee. i also observe taht the plants stretches themselves towards the light. Not good for stem plants. they look funny and would take time regain their straight posture. However, i do notice a significant reduction in algae with that method.

be kind! =)
For this method to work, there must be some ambient light during the siesta. If the siesta is in total darkness, the plants will think its night and go to sleep... it really screws up their cycle.
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.

A woman: without her, man is nothing.
