Hi..there my question is what if my drift wood is rotting in my tank, will it cause any problem beside causing the water to turn brown and dirty ... will it cause my fish or crab to die?

    Re: Drift Wood rotting

Driftwood will not rot Water will be tinted with new driftwood but not mature ones. However, driftwood never pollute water to an extend that it kills, neither will it cause critters death.

Chances of overcrowding, overfeeding, & not conducting water change are 200% higher than driftwood pollution

okie... cause my driftwood has been in my tank water for 1 week already..it seem that there is lots of white mouldy hairly stuff is growing on it that i think it fungus..
Also my driftwood that i got from was from a plant nursery....not from fish shop..by it look like driftwood and after 1 week of soaking it still hard and solid ... just that there are lots of fungus growing on it... how ?
Should i cycle the wood longer in my tank?

    Driftwood is not seasoned

You may leave the driftwood in the tank to cycle it until the fugus has nothing to feed on. And it will be cleaned. Remove it if you are taking in part in competition, else it is ok.

Oh. I mean it is unsightly if the wood is covered with fugus especially you are taking part in the planted tank competition.

    Re: Drift Wood rotting

I have a big piece of driftwood I got from Qian Hu. I have it in my tank for more than 1 year. There was no problem except for the initial yellow tint, which has long gone away.

Recently, I took it out to re-scape and re-tie some moss on it. The outer layer of the wood kind of crumbled and flaked off during handling. I rinse it in a pail of water and the water turned brown/black; it is like adding soil to water. Anyway, after tying the moss, I put it back to the tank. The filter was choked with these black wood dust (or more appropriately, suspension) for the initial few weeks but things have return to normal again after that.

Is that normal for driftwood? how long will it last before it completely disintegrate?

Depending on what fish you are keeping. The tint color of the water does give the tank a special look.
I kept parrot fish with driftwood and they love it.
Seems like their color is better with driftwood.
