Most people use the Dwarf Puffer, just one will do..after eating all the snails, they may nip the fins of your other fishes. This can be curbed by keeping it well fed. In my Experience, a very picky eater, won't even eat frozen bloodworms, i have to wiggle it around before it decides its alive. But i'm sure others have fed them sucessfully with frozen bloodworms..

Puffer do not hunt by chasing, but pouncing on unsuspected prey.

Please be aware that puffers DO NOT eat flakes, pellets, dried food.

To keep them healthy live food is a must. Some will take frozen worms... there are some cases that they go absolutely for live food.

They are very fussy feeders. Unless you are able to keep a constant supply of live food, please reconsider keeping them.

let me add on, most fig-8 puffers ONLY EAT live food ... i've had 2 before and even when their stomach are totally sunken in, they refused to eat anything including frozen blood worms ... they slowly pass away from starvation []

Or, you can live with having snails in your tank. []

They don't harm your plants, in fact they help to eat dead organic material, leftover food and algae. If you don't like seeing hundreds of them on the glass, then clean the glass. I've found that they only go the glass when there is algae there, even if you don't see any. Look at the glass from the side and you notice some patches on the glass and that the snails are congregating on those patches.

Oh yeah, snails only live if thye have stuff to eat, so less algae, less snails.

Yes most snails do not harm your plants.

OTOH, some large yamatos may snip at mosses or riccia.

Holes in leaves may mean some form of deficiency... probably K.

Be warned : Even 1 single dwarf puffer can result in a tank full of nipped fins. I took it out after it nipped my favourite golden (ballon) ram.

Snails r back in business at the moment (just caught 5-6 on my moss and fed them all to my puffer). Apparently, the little nipper did not eradicate all of them despite being in the tank for a little more than 1 wk. []

I'm gonna let it be for now. It's just too much work trying to siphon them out every night. []

Most likely you're seeing them eat the already dead/dying parts of the leaf.

I did see once the Apple snail I had eat good leafs from the stem.
It only take seconds for it to finish a leaflet.

But my plant is fast growing one so did not see any obvious damage.

Darn... I always get too zealous about telling ppl to that the snails are harmless to plants and forget to mention which snails...

The ramshorns are ok. Dunno about apple snails. There's the other one which is round with a pointed tip which is seems ok too.

apple snails which are the huge ones sometimes orange colour, are very voracious plant eaters, do not keep them with plants!!! I tried them once, finished up ALL my moss wall and plants, luckily it was not in my main tank!!

Ironically, those colourful snails that we need to buy may be harmful, most of those that free with plants are quite harmless.

But if you have those harmful snails, you will see your plants going botak pretty fast. You will not really see small holes only.
