Brought some new otos recently but last 2 days, notice 2 of the otos I brought kept "fainting" ie. them swam and then sort of drop to the bottom of the tank, touch them then they seems ok for a time and it starts again.... what happen? never seen anything like it before.

Do they flip over? Red gills? How old is your tank? Definitely not a good sign.

Ken, I also experience this. Bought 8 Oto from Gan's last Saturday. Last night noticed 2 of them with this behaviour. They can still suck on the leaves/glass but when they let go, they drop upside-down to the bottom. After that they try to make another dash to something for support.

My tank is 1.5 months and just treated for BGA. The previous single Oto in there still OK. All other Cardinals/ Neons/ Apistos are perfectly OK.

I thought I was the only one...

Mine too... I just got them last Sat too.
They just swim up the surface then free-fall to the bottom.

I had changed 25% of my tank's water 3 days before getting the otos and no other fishes were exhibiting any illness.

    Wondering what is this problem?

Now only 6 left and counting.

    Cheers,

Yimin, I think that shipment is more than a week, maybe two, when I bought. Usually he will advise us that they are not stable yet to be sold. Since he sells to us, must be OK, right?

could be related to my problem (ie: mine is advanced stage) check the med board.

    ---
the only things I bought from gan last week was. 3 corydoras leucomelas and 2 corydoras adolfoi.

    ---
    other things bought that week.
    2 corydoras habrosos from petmart
    6 marbled hatchets from petmart
    3 corydoras macropterus from chongsua
2 corydoras schwartzi from that fish and pet place.

    ---
so last week was unusual for me due to the multiple source of imports.

    check your other fish.

    --
the possibility is there for pathogen transfer due to the common nets used.

bought 5 fr pet mart 2 weeks ago. one of them have the same behaviour for about 2 days. But the 5 of them including the existing 10 is fine till todate.

Have the same problem from the first batch. And noticed that those affected are the smaller one.

I think once they are adjusted to your tank water condition, then they should be fine.

Drop out of otos during introduction stage is not uncommon. A long and slow acclimatisation and dimming of lights will reduce the stress. I have some drop out from my first 2 batch of otos... but finally my last batch of 4... no casualties.

wonder if it 's due to the batch or the acclimatisation of the otos ... anyone's comments?

I just asked a friend who got the otos the same time as me...
His are doing well; but he is not keeping them in a planted tank...

Acclimatization methods should be the same between us.

Wonder if these fishes are sensitive to the fertilizers?
