Chiller power comsumption depends on the size of the chiller, the temp of the surroundings and the temp you want to maintain. Results varies with different condition. Price of the chiller, errr you have to go get quotation yourself. If I'm not wrong your 8ft tank needs a minimum of 1hp. So the power used is similar to an air-con switch on 24/7.

The is another brand... Resun which I'm not too sure if it's able to support your tank size. Juz remember not to undersize the chiller when purchasing it. In worst case, you can get 2 chillers to cool your tank.

Teco chillers are known to be reliable similar to Eheim filters. But they do come with a heavy price tag. This Italian made chillers are known to last for years. Mine is more that 2 years old.

    Hey Sherwin,

Teco is indeed know to last. One friend of mine bought a 5 year old RA680 last year. Did a bit of minor servicing himself and it's still working great! If you project the cost over 5 years, I think then Teco will be as economically feasible as the rest of the brands.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

Also when i calculate the maximum volume of water minus the sand is around 200 litres for my 4 ft tank. I would choose a higher power chiller 250 litre capacity to do the job so that the chiller will not be running all the time.
That will save more electricity and the chiller will definitely last longer, i think the main different will be the initial cost.
Correct me if I am wrong.

The aunt at Keong Seong Fish Shop recommends that the chiller to be connected with another pump instead of our eihem pump so that the water will flow faster and less obstruction. She say another way to cool water faster and chiller work harder as there are alot of media in the eihem pump.

    Does anyone disagree?

Most of the chillers are rated for fish only tanks... i.e. not subjected to high heat source like 3W/gal of lights. Teco website recommends that for planted tanks go up one model from the recommended for the same volume of water.

Err.. if there is lots of media, and the flow is slower, the chiller has more time to chill the water as it passes through, but it takes longer for the whole tank volume to flow thru. It might come down to the same thing in the end.

The reason that it is good to have a powerhead pumping for the chiller is there is a signifcant flow rate drop due to the chiller itself. Being reluctant to add anymore hoses into my tank, I'm using my Eheim 2028to pump at full force. The flow now is relatively slow but ideal for planted tanks.

Why dont you install an aircon in the room, cost about the same and maybe even cheaper, can serve many tanks, as long as they are in the room, you can enjoy the aircon too.

    leafhorn,
Actually the reason is because of the electricity consupmtion. To cool a tank you need only to run the chiller compressor the most 2~3 hours a day. To cool a room you may need to run the air con compressor at least 12 hours a day. You do the maths.
    Cheers!!

agree. think of the long term investment.
if u get a gd chiller and it runs 2 to 3 hrs a day and maybe saves u 20 dollars a mth on ur elect bills.
    why not?
in the long long run u can see the diff.
heard from some of the forummers here they have been using teco chillers for 5 years with no probs.
    hows tt?

Fridge and air cons market is big thus products such as this is mass produced while chillers are not. With the small volume production, cost is definately gonna be higher.
    Cheers!!
