Is this necessary? the PH is currently at 6, would it adversely affect my plants?

Peat will reduce the KH slightly. Test both your KH & pH.

I don't add it except to the substrate. The fish will do well in a good healthy plant tank and feed a good diverse diet of food. Those two parts are the most important for breeding fish in a plant tank. Some peat is fine but a KH/GH or less than 3 degrees or 50ppm generally is bad for plants if you use CO2. Discus breed just fine at GH/KH or 3.

Thanx Tom and others, I'm curious though on why you add it to the substrate and how do you do it? Inject it in or are you using peat moss as part of your base fert? Thanx.

Here in Singapore, our tap water is very soft. IMO, using of peat is not neccessary in terms of KH/pH reduction.

But I do not know whether the Discus will have other benefits from peat.
