There is no need to treat the sponge. Just rinse it and its ready to be used. It will not affect the water parameter anyhow. If you want to seed the filter with beneficial bacteria, you could run it for a week or 2 in a seasoned tank first.
just bought a sponge filter should i just use it in my current tank or should i soak with water from the current tank and let it run in a pail for afew hours before i used it in my tank?

Yah, ive had no problems with new sponge (without treatment) so far.
