Set up this tank during CNY. Immediately after that got BGA. But resolved now. Initially planned to have South American biotope concept but I think got the wrong idea. Apistos are seldom fond in such planted areas. And I got a rojak mix of them. Hope they like their new jungle.

    Tank: 30"x18"x18"
    Lights: 144W PL
    Filter: Eheim 2224
Substrate: 2" Cold Storage Cocopeat laced with Root Monster pellets, 1" gravel

Plants (all SA except for one Gratiola looking one which I am removing.):
Alternanthera reineckii (2 versions), Ludwigia inclinata, Hydrocotyle leucocephala, Eichhornia diversifolia, Echinodorus 'Rubin' (ok, this is cultivar), Echinodorus quadricostatus, Limnobium laevigatum (South American Frogbit)

    Fish (all SA):
    Neon Tetras, Cardinal Tetras, A.nijsenni (1 pair), A.agassizii (1 pair), A.borellii (2m, 1f), A.gibbiceps (1m), Rams (2 pairs), and fainting Otocinclus

The old A.nijsenni male from Toh Farm.

Anybody wants to go to Toh's farm after the workshop this sat?(esp for those who can provide transport ). Those Apisto pics posted by Juggler remind me the cheap Apisto in Toh's farm again.[]

Look OK only in photo lah...
    BTW - any comments?
    Thinking of:
    1) removing the Gratiola sp.
    2) distributing the L.inclinata to be the background.
    3) moving the A.reneckii to the mid-left section.
    Cheers!

Nice ! You seem to have the magic touch in aquascaping whether it's big or small tank,

Is the setup demanding in light and fertilizing ? And did you just use your classic cocopeat and gravel as substrate ?

    Thks.

    KF,

What a nice setup. Agree with you on:
    3) moving the A.reneckii to the mid-left section.

Sorry for my ignorance, may I ask what is Cold Storage Cocopeat? You bought it at Cold Storage? Why do you use 1" gravel?

    Thanks.

Photos can be deceiving... as I am a good at photography too.
Yes - still using my cocopeat method, plus some slow-release Ocean Free Root Monsters pellets.

Feel free to drop by again to get plants and view the tanks.

I am using Horti moss (sphagnum peat moss) for base. So far so good too... and it's cheap.

A.reneckii has since shifted to left side of tank. I have thoughts of thinning down the EQ much, much more so I can expand the A.reneckii to occupy the left foreground. Also contemplating to replace EQ with ET but I love to see the apistos take cover in the EQ bush.

The cocopeat can be bought at Cold Storage for $2. It is a 5L pack.
1 placed 1" thickness of gravel on top of 2" of cocopeat. That's how I usally setup.

BC: does the moss lower the pH? or stain the water yellow? NO3 and PO4 levels are OK?

Lately, I have not tested my water except for NO2 & NO3.

2 weeks ago, I just change my plain gravel substrate to Seachem Onyx(2-3&quot + Horti moss(3/4&quot.

Seachem Onyx have some buffering characteristics (raises KH). So I decided to add a thin layer peat moss to the base... and I found Horti moss.

It does not stain the water. The NO3 level seems ok (~10ppm) and my tank is completing the N-cycling (with all my 30+ fishes inside ). Plants seemed to be doing ok. The hairgrass was sprouting new growth after about 1 week. Most of the algae were gone.[]

I will post some pics of my new setup soon.

KF, your tank is beautiful. However, I would prefer the red plant, which is eye catching, not to be at the centre of the tank. There will be more visual interest if you put it on the 1/3 grid rule, which is the psychological point of attraction.

Question: Don't mind you share with me, what is your reasons for using cocopeat instead of others like JBL, Dennerele, etc? Do you find it better than those? Does it work the same like those? I might like to consider that if it's so.

    Yeah what does cocopeat do?
