Overnight I find my shoal of ten 6-banded barbs all coming down with white spots. None of the other newly acquired B. maculata nor the orignial harlequin rasbora got them.

So I presume the parasite must have infected them while at the LFS?

Now the question is, should I take out all the infected barbs and treat them (don't have a properly filtered tank to do this), or just treat the entire tank?

u can treat white spots easily with a heater to keep the temperature of water at around 28-30 degrees C with medication. It should go off in 1 or 2 days.

As for a filter tank ... i usually keep a 2 ft vacant tank just incase ... anyway, it's relatively cheap to get a 2ft tank nowadays. Btw, u don't even need to have a filter when treating your fish in a 2 ft tank as u only need to treat them for 2 days ... just some air bubbles will do.

    Its all from my experinece....

White spots should be treated in tank... This is simply because every fish in there is already exposed to it and is at risk. In local weather, there is usually no need to add a heater... that is unless you use a chiller, in which case switch your heater or fan off. As for medication, there are lots of things you can try, but I would go with the simplest method... Salt. I use Salt at abt 1 tbsp/5G with good effect against white spots. You have to maintain your salt levels for about 2 weeks, even if you don't see the white spots. This is due to the life cycle of the ich.

thanx guys, I've used the Azoo ich-away (or whitespot-away can't remember) medication before to good effects. Will do the whole tank then.

    Choy,

reminder: check instructions to see if it affects plants and invertebrates.

I thought that the medication might stain the food.
    Thanks a lot!

no no please feed as usual... not feeding them can cause them to be even more stressed further affecting their immune systems.

Where did u buy this Azoo ich away medicine?

I have one RAM and a couple of cardinals infected with WhiteSpot
My RAM is very badly infected, but is still quite active.

I decided to leave them in the tank because I do not want to create unncessary stress by moving them to another tank.
My only defence is my UV filter now. Does UV filter works on White Spots?

I don't want to put SALT because at 300L, I will need to put in 60 teaspoons of salt, I cannot imagine doing that.

I had used Oceanfree Ich away (or was it White-spot away, something like that, check the label it says it treats Ich), as well as Sera Costapur. Both works like a charm. Follow the instruction, the treatment last 10-14 days. Do not think UV will help as the cyst will drop into the substrate rather than getting taken into the UV and filter.
