What is the PH at?
Sometimes moss will die if the water parameters change too quickly.
Hi bros,
Tied some Taiwan Moss to a driftwood recently and the leaves started to turn yellow 2 days later in my low tech tank. What's happening?
Here are my parameters:
Tank: 1.5ft, 5 gallon
Water: 26 - 27C, dosed with Excel Flourish every other day
Light: 15W FL on 8 hours a day
Setup:
Taiwan Moss turning yellow:
Is this normal for newly planted moss?
Thanks!

Im not too sure about the PH levels yet, haven't got myself a test kit.
What is the ideal PH level for my shrimp, moss and hairgrass setup?
How can I adjust the PH accordingly?
Get a test kit first of all. I think you might need it, if your water is soft like many of these guys form Singapore.
Soft water can fluctuate rapidly, causing the PH to drop very low.
Tetra makes a good kit, just make sure to get the freshwater one (I accidentally got the saltwater one when I needed to replace my old one 'doooh')
If you just put the moss in there, it could have been yellow before you tied it?
Also high temps, and lack of CO2 or oxygen (at night) can cause the moss to yellow/brown.
Oh also, it is a good idea to remove the dead moss. I have found if you leave it in there, the hair algae might attack it. You don't want to deal with that stuff.

do you mean low tech tank cannot grow moss?
if so, you are very very wrong. i have grown all sorts of moss and fissidens in low tech tank.
alot of other people are doing so.
I don't mean that.
I meant growing moss in a low tech tank with the expectation of getting results akin to that of a high tech tank is the problem.

taiwan moss are low demand plants. they grow like crazy in all my tanks. just keep the parameters stable and they will grow, once most tanks are settled plants grow.
Thanks EvolutionZ bro for the clarification. For a moment I thought that moss cannot be grown in a low tech conditions (though i was pretty sure I have seen some bros here who have done it)
Work's taking up too much time and I have yet to get a test kit.
Will update further, thanks!
i have grown taiwan moss in the exact condition and no browning.
i belive its pH crash that burnt the moss.
Hi guys,
Just got myself some test kits and here are my parameters:
GH: 30
KH: 0
PH: 6.5
NO2: 3
NO3: 40
Is this ok?

Oh by the way,
I just bought a CO2 tank at 1 bubble every 2 secs, is this ok too?
All except for the KH... KH is 0, are you sure? You need KH for plants to survive, they call it carbonate hardness. This is related to how the plants take in CO2.
You can buy some liquid KH stuff, just ask some of your other local SG guys to recommend one to you, as I don't know what you have available over there. Also Epsom Salt (MgSO4) can add some KH, but also raises the PH/GH as well.

You might want to raise the KH, and GH before injecting CO2. Without "buffers" (minerals) in the water, the PH will crash below 6.0 even!
This would be bad for all of your tanks inhabitants. So get some buffers in there first. Since your GH is low, almost any kind of buffers will work. I would say target PH should be 6.5 after CO2 is turned on. Before you inject CO2, getting the water up to 7.0-7.2 is good, since CO2 can lower the PH.

Increase your lighting, since you have added CO2. I actually grow mosses in low tech tank, but a good PL lighting is essential along with Seachem excel works for me like a charm. At 1.5 ft, I go with a 24W PL.
Don't count bubbles.. measure co2 in relation to KH and PH and aim it at 30ppm. For your reference:- http://atlas.csd.net/~cgadd/aqua/art_plant_co2chart.htm

Excellent Wabi! I was looking for the chart to give him, but lost it from my PC.
This is mainly true, but if you turn the CO2 too high, you won't have time to calculated anything... your fish/shrimp will be dead. This is probably why people use the counting method as a rough gauge.
If you have soft water (which he does), make sure to turn the CO2 off a night, to avoid PH/oxygen crash.
Also I believe it is concluded already that a KH of 0 is not good for the plants/other inhabitants. So add some buffers or "KH up" MgSO4 will do the trick to as mentioned earlier.

Hi guys,
Thanks all for your input. Here's an update of the moss:
I basically filled up my hang-on filter with ceremic rings, and added some coral chips with constant 30 percent water changes for the first few days.
Thanks again!
Great! Good to see results! Thanks for the pics. Just thin the moss every once and a while to keep it growing nice.
