Hi, this is just to ask you guys how you condition your water to be suitable for use in aquarium. What chemicals do you use.

Also, what test kits do you guys use for GH, KH, PH, PO4, NH etc.
    Need some recommendations. Thank you

    Robin

People normally condition their water with anti chlorine. But i let my tank run for 2 weeks, to age it. Can't advice on test kits, best is you can try out the various brands out there, and in my logic thinking, get the test kits from the same brand(sera, jbl etc). I suppose different brands cater to different needs (ie: to what degree of accuracy they want to know*).

Hi Robin, if your house copper pipe is more than 10 year old, you may need to watch out for copper poisoning. To test this, get some malayan shrimps. If the shrimps die and you can't find other reasons for their death, I would suggest copper poisoning is the likely culprit.

    My views of test kits:

NH3: not necessary, NO2 should catch any N-cycling problem.
NO2: for setting up of new tanks and N-cycling.
    pH: for monitoring CO2 injection
    KH: for monitoring CO2 injection
GH: for adjusting nutrients Ca, Mg levels
Fe: may not be necessary, can just base on Fe calculations from the contents on liq fert to adjust dosage.
NO3: give important information on macronutrient NO3 in tank, essential to judge the health of your tank
PO4: give important information on macronutrient PO4 in tank, essential to judge the health of your tank

Robin, I can't tell you what brand is good, but I can tell you that many of us do not use conditioner. I believe that a few forumers do leave their water in a pail overnight before using the water for their tank.

I live in a fairly old apartment, and I have not used any conditioner for a very long time. I just pour tap water into my tank directly. So far, I have not experienced any problem.

Hope this helps and will give you some peace of mind. []

Can anyone confirm the comments by lip?
Is it safe for most of you tp just leave water in pail overnight or pour directly?

    Regards

I also pour tap water directly into the tank during water change. No problem wif the fishes. I do water change at night probably ard 8pm coz my unit is at the top most of the flat n the water could get quite hot in the mid afternoon.

    Robin,

BFG and myself can only tell you what we experienced. I can also tell you that a couple of my friends pour water in directly from the tap without problems. If you search this site, you will find discussion on this topic as well.

You should judge for yourself whether you wish to follow our practice.
