Hi everyone, I'm a newbie in planted tank, would like to know is it possible to grow japan hairgrass without co2 in a planted tank.

    Re: Japan hairgrass

I've tried going cheapo and growing them in a low-tech (just water and soil and a single betta, no filter whatsoever) tank by my window. Doesn't seem to grow at all. Not dying, but not growing either. Maybe they will need a longer (way longer) time to have runners.

Growing them now in 2 ft tank with cheapo aquarium lights and cheapo filter, again no growth, not dying either.

They grow well and thick under T5, CO2 with good water circulation. Hope this answers your question.

    Re: Japan hairgrass

I am currently keeping hairgrass in a 1 feet standard tank with 2 X 8 Watts of T5 without CO2. Fine river sand substrate with regular dosing of liquid fert. It's producing runners now after about 2 weeks of settling in.

In my 2 feet, it is stagnant with little growth. So I guess if you give it ample light and lots of fert, it should do well.

Thank you all for the feedback, thinking of setting up a nano tank in the office. wong1979 which brand of liquid fert you're dosing.

    hi,
those with success with japan hairgrass, can highlight what are the requirements for lighting (how many watts for a 1 ft, 2ft), what is the best for water movement (type of pump best suited), what is the co2 dosing rate, and the intervals of fertiliser to use and best types suited for them.

    thanks.

LushGro Aqua or Sera Florena. My tank should be around 27 C cooled by fan. Office should be cooler and better, but not sure whether too cold will make the growth slower.

I got mine from Pasir Ris Farmway 3, an aquatic plant farm called Capricorn. $5 worth is enough for your needs.

    Re: Japan hairgrass

I bought some grass that were attached to a piece of wire mesh. i can basically just put them in the tank right and there will be runners running out right? when the grass grows too long, how do i trim it? can i just cut it at the top like how they cut grass on the grass lawn?

    Hi TS

I just learnt planting. If I am not wrong, moss doesnt need CO2 and as for hair-grass, I think that they still need co2. As for lighting is important too. Use T5 lighting for planting. Not forgetting about adding a chiller.

    Cheers

Alternatively, you can try Dennerle Planta Gold 7, it works like magic.
