is your fan ac or dc operated?
try and check if something is loose and causing the loud noise. or is it the air flow noise that you are complaining about?
try looking for dc operated fans. generally, ac operated ones are noisier. check out some lfses to see the range of fans available.

Fan rotor on ball bearings run much quieter than sleeve bearing rotor. The former is more expensive.

i believe the fan you got is an AC fan. The characteristics are like that..... and most fans are that noisy. If you want quieter, go for DC fans.

if you are getting a dc fan, i suggest you get this : NMB (made in japan) 80mm fan.

it should be sufficient for your needs and veri quiet too.

    Life and Death.

IMO, AC fan is dangerous if you are not careful working on your tank with it running.

I had the whole fan dropped into my tank once when I was triming my plants, I got electrocuted lightly and instinctly I got my hand out of water as fast as possible, the fan landed in the tank, crushed some of my plants and did some trimming for me and destroyed 30% of my setup. But lucky no fish die.

Juz bought NMB DC fan (80mm) but made in china @ sim lim tower for $3.
The shop is located at the basement. I think tats shop sells the cheapest but can checkout others. Have tried it and its very silent.

Adding on to this question: Does the NMB DC Fan come with an adapter for ac mains or is it battery operated only?

No it doesn't come wit adapter but u can purchase ac/dc transformer @ sim lim tower. Make sure the total ampere of ur dc fan doesn't exceed your max ampere of ur transformer or u risk of over heating and eventually burning ur transformer which is dangerous.

By the way NMB fan is only 0.14amp. So if u using 2 dc fan 1 amp transformer should be sufficient.

Heres a link for u to check out if u aren't sure how to go about DIYing the fan.

Good Luck. Hope this help. []
