    I have a tank size approx 22cm x 12 cm x 12 cm

I'm thinking of getting about 4 to 6 small fishes. This is ok?

thinking of one of the following species.

    neon tetra
    cardinal tetra
    guppy
    zebra danio

    which one should I take?
hopefully can introduce plants in at a later stage.

also a air pump will seem to produce too much air flow for the small fishes, i wonder if it will scare the fishes.
my colleague and i started a small goldfish tank in office, the goldfish seems to swim away from the air stone.
    any suggestions?

It all depends on what type of fish you prefer because afterall you are the owner of the tank. Personally, I prefer cardinal tetras. If kept in good conditions, the red and neon blue will stand out from the plants(if you intend to add some in the future). Anyway, they grow well in group. I think at least 6.

Maybe you can a hang-on filter. The flow will not be so great.

you mean i can just use a hang-on filter without a air-pump? will that aerate the water?
any brand/model to recommend? i got access to the LFS at clementi.

    Re: Suggestions for small tank.

That's a very small tank so you might want to reconsider your bioload. Get those fish that do not produce so much waste. And start with plants (with 1 or 2 hardy fishes to get the cycle started), once they plants are rooted or established, the nicer fishes can come later.

I have 2 no-tech 20cm tanks in my office. One has no filter/aeration, only a 13W light but tonnes of mosses. In it I only have shrimps inside (10 CRS and 10 malayans), but I'm already thinking of transferring some out to a 3rd tank as they are breeding like crazy and the numbers might rise. In such small tank setups you must maintain the balance. Once you lose the balance, it is easy for the entire population to get wiped out.

bro, I would not recommend you to keep the first three species(cardinals, neons, guppies) on your tank. Unless you are talking about wild guppies, most guppies are very delicate and weak due to internal breeding. Guess you will have a hard time keeping them in the small tank. Secondly, on neon and cardinals, they live in groups of at least 6. You may face bioload problems. What I suggest is, make it a planted tank and keep some algae eaters like otos and amano shrimp. =) Bro, most likely you won't need air pump for planted tanks.
    Regards,

    Desmond

am in the mist of gathering stuff.
got fish food and the small tank.

    plants maybe soon.

    probably get zebra danio.

    need silent airpump and anti-chlorine.
wondering if a filter can be skipped.

I think i might still stick to zebra. should be more hardy. this is really a very small tank. not sure if there are many fishes that can cope with this conditions in a low tech tank. i might try with plants and lights without air pump and filter, to see if the zebra can handle. if they are really gasping and then i add airpump and and bubble filter.

this might take longer than expected. my 9 year old PC just kaput on me. Spent a bit on a new computer. good thing i don't play games.

Badis are very small and quite hardy. For the plants, perhaps you can consider getting fava ferns. They don't require much lights or CO2 injection. A small fan to agitate the water surface will help too.

    Re: Suggestions for small tank.

I would not recommend the danios, they get surprising large, and love swimming room. Quite cruel in a tank that size.

Both neons and cardinals will still be too large when fully grown! That, and they are schooling fish too.

The guppies, I would go for. A trio of males would seem fine. They (males) can get as big as the other fish, but just mill about rather than schooling so shouldn't hate the cramped conditions as much

I have no trouble about supposedly inbred and delicate guppies, but I suppose here in Australia we don't get as fancy specimens for sale mine have always been impossible to kill!

    Re: Suggestions for small tank.

thanks for all the input so far, but as the previous post mentioned, i've already stuck to zebras and had already gotten them.
the tank might be too small, but that's the only table top space I could afford at home.
they are surviving still, without air pump and filter.
entire tank filled with moss and hornworts and a strand of elodea. pity the fishes, hardly have space to swim.
only problem is the fishes only feed on the micropellets as they drop down. seldom going to the surface to get the food. so i can't really tell if i've been feeding enough, cos i keep seeing the floating food among the plants.
