The keeping of Sulawesi shrimps is indeed both challenging and vexing. After struggling with various set-ups, I am beginning to see some success. Guess alot of perserverance and $$ is needed to keep these fascinating shrimps.

i only had success with the white glove species.

bro mind sharing your water parameters?
Basically i have 2 separate set up with almost identical water parameters.
The only difference is temp. One hovers around 27 to 30, the other 24 to 26.

pH - 8.5
GH - 4 - 5
TDS - 150 - 200
Substrate - inert gravel and Lake towuti sand
Decoration - Sulawesi Stones, old coral rock
Water - Full RO water aged in container filled with coral chips

I think the shrimps are very sensitive to contaminants. Small traces of unknown substances can wipe out most of them.

Will try to post my setup soon.

I see there are like 5/ 6 different types of sulawesi shrimps you have. Which one is easier to keep? Easier as in lower fatality rate?

In terms of ease and tolerance of water parameter

1. Caridinal dennerli (white spot)
2. Caridinal ensifera
3. Caridinal holthuisi (Matano tiger/ six banded)
4. Caridinal caerulea (Poso blue leg)
5. Caridinal sp white orchid
6. Caridinal sarasinorum

Difficult species
1. Caridinal spinata
2. Caridinal striata (Redline)
3. Caridnal woltereckae (often mistaken for spongicola)

is Caridnal woltereckae "look" like bigger version of spongicola?

Yup it is. Almost all the shrimp by the trade name celebes beauty or spongicola should actually be woltereckae.
The spongicola is not as colourful and can only be found in 1 single location in the lake.
C woltereckae is widespread in the lake Towuti and is found amongst rocks and sandy substrate.

Interesting that you have 2 setups with different temperature. Is there a specific temperature need for some of your shrimps species?

The temperature range is between 26 to 30 for the sulawesi shrimps.

I am just trying out to see if lower temp or higher temp allows the shrimp to live longer.
Lower temp gives higher dissolved O2 content.

The tanks I had were decomissioned about 3 months back as I had to move. I am restarting again.

Parameters wise I have yet to check but basically I went for similar stuff in my new set up.

I fed them with normal shrimp food as well as fish food. Also the new set up is near a window so it does get lotsa morning sun which means... algae! So guess when i do not feed, the shrimps can feed on the algae.

Are you keeping these beauties as well?

my tank is beside the windows too.. and there is alage growing in the gravels... can see from outside the tank.. the gravels turn green and there is alot bubbles trapped in it. Some time the bubbles will come blowing out to the surface...
is it dangerous?

i believe those bubbles are oxygen, unless you stir your gravel, which release trapped air which is not good for your shrimps.

Sorry to hear that you had to tear down the tanks, but life sometimes gets in the way of our hobby! I have had a try at these shrimp - and did not have great success. Some of the problems are now pretty obvious - I over stocked my tank and lost the harlequins pretty quickly and the rest - Redlines, Yellow cheeks, and most of the cardinals over the next several months. I think that the yellow cheeks may have had a disease. they would develop brown patches on the shells and die shortly after. An expensive lesson. The Sulawesi tank is still set up and maturing - the Red Cherry water plants are growing after initially dying back. I do plan to try again with a single species ( White Orchids) and distribute them into three tanks. I would like to thank you for all of your useful posts!. One final note, I froze the newly dead shrimp and hope to get them to the shrimp pathology lab at Arizona State University. I would like to see if they are able to determine what caused the deaths. If they will look at the shrimp, I will share the information.
