I was thinking of keeping some with my tetras when I started my tank.

But later I found that they can look really "ugly" to me if they are grow-ups, as I hate their 2 hairs near the mouth! (I must admit I have no liking for the barbus family.)

I would rather keep some catfish instead!

Although i no longer keep them...

Cherry barbs are very interesting and fun to watch fish. Those in the LFS are not in real good condition. Mine was really bloody red and always playing, chasing each other in a 'indian file' all around the tank. Use to sit in front of the tank just watching them play. Wouldnt want to give them away if not for concentrating on tetra planted tank.

Me too like cherry barbs for their redness. It is a good contrast to the green vegetation or the black backgound. Don't focus too much on the pair of barbs though. Not much fishes suitable for planted tanks have the redness. I must admit that i like red and blue a lot. Thus i have cherry bards, neon n cardinal in my tanks.

try the Sundadanio axelrodi, these comes in red, blue and green forms (natural not painted!!), are small and peaceful thus suitable for small thickly planted tanks. But they're kind of rare. Biotope has the blue ones now, came from Kalimantan.
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.
