Clown loach is notoriously known to meddle with substrate in a planted tank. Besides that, what are the disadvantages of keeping them?

they grow pretty big, up to a foot long i believe. So you'd wanna have a big aquarium if you're gonna keep them.

Yikes! 1 foot! I have a 4 footer planted .I imagine they will overrun the tank. they sure look cute when small. Thanks for the reply. Maybe a tank with lots of hardscape and tough plants is better.

i remember reading somewhere that clown loaches are painfully slow growers. even if they do grow, its unlikely that they will reach max size of 1 foot in captivity. So if you are ok with them messing up your substrate and digging up your plants you should be fine.

Another disadvantage is that they are subsceptible to white spot infections. But once they are happy in your tank, they are usually very hardy.

They will probably eat most of the snails if not shrimps in your planted tanks. If you want a smaller loach species suitable for a planted tank, try Yasuhikotakia sidthimunki aka the old Botia sidthimunki. It's a dwarf loach that does fine in planted tanks in small shoals.

    Read this as a guide:
