Actually all my 5 cardinals died. I replace them with 10 neon tetra. 2 died within a week but remaining 8 is happily swimming in my tank right now

HULK> Yes it seems dirty, till date I have not done a water change except for weekly water top up. I only wash my HOF when i see drop in the water flow.

I'm now considering getting a bigger HOF, but have been busy to go 328 to shop for one.

Re: My new Low tech tank

Sorry for not updating my tank status for quite a while. have been busy with the new member in my family ; my son who is coming 5mths old this weekend.

Anyway here is an update of my tank.
Hair Grass has been removed and the moss is growing like crazy!!!!! Have pluck and trim of at leas 1/4 of them from what you will see in the below picture.
Anyone has a good method to keep them neat and tidy?

Some of my cherry shrimps looks like your sakuras. My cherries could have been passed of as sakuras. How do you tell them apart?

Re: My new Low tech tank

in C328 the shrimps labelled sakuras look quite different from their cherry shrimps. The sakuras look "redder" than cherry as far as C328 is concerned....

oink, i am also starting a small 30cm tank so your effort is very useful reference for me.

The 30cm tank currently has no substrate just plants on driftwood as a learning experience after 20+ years away from the hobby. The fish are breeding so at least it gives me comfort that i am doing something correct.... So now going to convert it to 'proper' planted tank (I have a spare tank to house the fish in the meantime).

I'm also using HoF but also I'm experiencing what many experienced people know, despite the high flow rates of HoF, their filtration ability is not as good as canister. For example, after adding additional filter media (mix of fine filter wool and ceramic rings) to my HoF, the HoF starts overflowing a little bit as the water cannot pass through the fine wool fast enough. Slowing down the flow rate solves the problem tho'.

Don't know whether it's inevitable to get canister as getting a large HoF for a small tank will cause big water movement, dunno if it will stress out the fish/shrimp?

You can get the corner box filter at C328, Y618 for about 4 gold coins. It has the filter material and it works like a charm, if you don't mind the bubbles. HOF are economical and simple to install, but can be a real pain in the butt as it restrict your scaping according to the water flow.

erwinx> You can actually get those small canister filter meant for small tanks. Example like Eden 501.

This I agree, often thinking if the tank is well circulated by the current or not.

This I actually got this light set 2nd hand from another forum member here.
In fact the light set was meant for 30cm, but with can be extended to my tank size of 40cm. I would say that is the max already, any further you might risk the leg breaking and light falling into the tank.
