My guess is probably minute traces of NO3 and PO4...
Hi,
If my plants start to bubble only after I change water, can we derive any conclusion about what type of nutrients are my tank lacking in?

My tank bubble after water change too. But my guess is bcoz I change 70% each time, my plants get more lightly directly due to low water levels and the ones not submerged get more CO2 gas exchange. Anyway new water is clearer then old one, so all this adds to the bubble effect. Water changes do replace trace nutrients but is it enuff to produce bubbles? I think not. My 2 cents.
u have co2 injection? if not.. then probably fresh water from ur tap has higher co2 content. hence.. bubblez.
Or the water that you put into your tank is super saturated with O2 from all the movement. So your plants are respiring at the same rate, but with the water at 100% saturation everything bubbles like champaign.
do you add liquid fertiliser, especially trace element into your tank with each water change or thereafter? My guess is that your plants may be straved of trace element which is present in fresh tap water.

The title below my name does not make me a guru...listen at your own risk!...
Should most plants bubble when conditions are right or only certain plants will? It's been 3 weeks since I planted my tank and so far no bubbling observed.

So many fish, so little time...
Hi Yok,
I've started having my planted tank about the same time as you. It start to bubbles only after the second day. I have mostly plants with stems. Sorry do not know the scientific names. Start pruning yesterday as most of them reached the top.

It should be true that there are nutrients lacking and by water change, renewed nutrients like Ca, Mg is replenished for plant uptake. It could also be, as David has pointed out, that you have done some ferterlization which could contribute to your plants bubbling. Please let us know which is it?----------------

Hi,
Its after I change water during the weekend, maybe its because I stay at home longer during the weekend so see more bubbling. Haha.
Bubbling on second day? That's great..[]
Mine is a 3 ft tank using 4x36w PL lights. Is the lighting sufficient?

Your lighting should be sufficient. Is there any problems with your tank?----------------

Sherchoo, my plants not bubbling..and I donno whether is it the lights or is it me...somehow i feel the light like very dim..

some kinds of plants, they also don't bubble
and even if you have plants that produce a lot of oxygen, if your water volume is very high, you might not see bubbles either
so it's not quite so straightfoward
reasons for not bubbling.
a) plants not photosynthesising.(Ie: nutrient imbalance: short of co2,K etc)
b) temperature.
c) lights.
d) plant itself. I don't think you will see anubias bubble
Anubias do bubble...I saw them the last time I use DIY CO2..The pH was 5.5 and KH 0 (was a newbie then..pH crash also occur..lots of dead shrimps)
Plant Physiology by Taiz and Zeiger
anubias will bubble when there are holes in the leaves
the same goes for crypts, echinodorus spp.
my echinodorus actually bubble
but from the roots
go figure
is plants bubbling, the 'holy grail' of planted tanks?
what is important is healthy plant growth and minimal algae.

I read that bubbling of O2 occurs when the water is saturated with O2.----------------

So if you have a high fish load, there may be less or no bubbling. But what's important is that plants and fish are healthy.
