Yours is a male Dwarf Gourami. How can it possibly be pregnant?

In the old days, the Colisa lalia (common name: Dwarf Gourami) were always sold in pairs. But about 30 years ago, a fish breeder in Singapore came up with a new strain of Colisa lalia which was all red in colour. Before that, there was only a blue/red strain. That breeder only sold his males as obviously, he didn't want anyone else to breed the fish. But one day, someone broke into his farm and stole many of his females. He put a notice in all newspapers warning fish shops not to sell the all-red strain and that he will take legal action against anyone doing so. Since then, fish shops stop selling females.

It's easy to sex the Colisa lalia as females are a pale grey in colour. A couple of years back, I went through a lot of trouble looking for the females and eventually managed to get some when a fish shop owner helped me. He said the farms use the females as "fish food" for bigger fishes.

The fish shown in the pics has a bloated stomach probably because it's overfed. However, it could also be a sign of dropsy. Dwarf Gouramis are highly susceptible to this disease. There's no cure. If you see the scales popping out like a pine cone, then your fish will have to be euthanised. Whatever you do, don't flush it down the toilet. Easiest and most merciful way I know is to drop the fish into a glass of iced water.

fishes. also, tis fish doesn't seem 2 be aggressive during
the feeding time. i doubt she ate alot.

well, i'll observe 4 another few days. if u could provide
me wif details of the bleeding habit like days n so on would
be helpful 4 me 2 determine how long i should observe.

    thanks

    Is tt story true?
Dwarf Gouramis are extremely easy to sex - the males are colourful (like the rainbow) while females are drap (usually 1 colour). Now ALL fish shops sell male specimens only, so ******* one. But I saw some female Dwarf Gouramis on sale for $1 each at Qian Hu.
This year, I see a lot of fish with badly distended stomach, which make them seem like they are pregnant. I have seen Clown Knifefishes, Zebra Danios, Black Neon Tetra and Rams (from different LFS) with such a syndrome, just to name a few. And they are all fed with live Tubifex worm. So either they got internal parasite or dropsy.

I also thought that it was over fed.

How many times you feed the fish a day?

In the worst case, if it is really internal infection, it is likely to stop eating. And if it is at the bloated stage, the disease is in quite advanced stage, the fish is very likely to die.

I used to read in books that to sex Gouramis, look also at the tip of the dorsal fin. If is rounded, then female. Pointed is male. Because sometimes the colours look the same. Is this correct as well?

The dorsal sexing method works best for members of the Trichogaster genus. I have sexed T. trichopterus and T. microlepis successfully with this method. But not for Colisa chuna and C. lalia.

Most fishes are opportunist feeders. That means when they see food they will eat until they really cannot jam the food in anymore... but not to the extent like gold fish who will eat until they bloat to death.

Feed that fish such that most of the fish food can be consume with 3 minutes. Anything left after 3 minutes is excess. Or you can reduce the feeding to once per day.

I feed my fishes once per day and occasionally once in 2 days.

actually hor, i dont feed them at all. i've no chance 2 do
so becos my mother-in-law did. she like 2 watch the fishes
dashing 2ward the food but juz doesn't know the consequences
of over feeding. all i could tell her is, try 2 minimise
the amount of food. bo bian lor, old ppl.
