    Hizzz,

Newbie to this forum. Thought it is fantastic!

Well, I have a BIG problem with a small tank. I have a 2ft tank lighted with 1 PL (36W), 1 X BioLux, 1 X NEC extra bright 12 Hours cycle. My tank temperature climbs up to 30-31 degrees during the day! The PL seems to be the main culprit heating the tank. Can my tank grow with only 30W of light? Is the temperature too high for proper growth of plants and promote algea growth?

    I have:

    Anubias barteri v. nana
    Eleocharis parvula (Hair grass)
    Cabomba carliniana
    Hygrophila difformis
    Vesicularia dubyana (Java Moss)
    Microsorium pteropus (Java Fern)
    Eusteralis stellata

Only the Water sprite is sprouting like mad, the Camboba grew few leaves but shoots upwards very fast. Sign of insufficient light? Java moss dying...

Any expert opinions on this problem? Thanks![]

Hi, it's better to lower the temp by means of a fan.
I'm having the same problem, temp around 30~31 deg. Plants should be able to cope but will do much better around 25~27.
Effects are dead shrimps(too high temp) and weird growth on R macranda(yellowish -greenish small leaves), but it could be a nutrient defiency problem.

Moss in general prefer cooler water. Probably why it's not doing well in your tank. I'm not sure wat is the total wattage you have now (not indicated in your post) but 2X36W would do nicely. 30W is too little for your choice of plants (execpt your Anubias).

Get a fan, as mentioned by Nicholas, I'm sure this would solve your heat problem. Try blowing it in at an angle to avoid too much surface agitation.
    Cheers!!

using fans to cool your tank is a good solution.
however, you may not have sufficient space.
you can try to lift your light slightly higher so that there is a gap between your lights and your tank.
this helps in allowing heated air to escape.

i actually think your problem is lack of nutrients
what're your fertiliser additions to your tank like?

If you are experienceing heat in this fashion you can use fans to remove the heat from the hood. This is not a perfect solution as it will only remove the excess heat, it cannot chill the water itself. There are some 12VDC comingout now that are VERY quiet at only 20db. One manufacturer is www.Vantec.com.

Another thing you cna do is remote mount any ballast or other devices that may be in your hood. My PC/CF have six foot cords and the ballasts are in the cabinet below.
