    Guys,
juz bought myself a figure 8 puffer yesterday to help me combat my snail problems.
    this was what i observed;
    1. puffer explored its new surrounding by banging its head onto the glass every now and then.
    2. puffer stayed motionless in one top corner of tank, gave it a nudge and it spiralled down to the base, another nudge set it going back to its head-banging routine.
    3. today, after coming back from work, saw my puffer in the top opposite corner of yesterday's, motionless, devoid of life. a nudge and the same cycle repeated itself again.

anyone care to enlighten? do these little buggers get fat by eating or by lazing? oh yah forgot to mention all snails were spared from the suppossedly snail-eating monster!

    there are a few possibliities.....

    1. Transport shock
    2. Temp Shock
    3. PH Shock
    4. Fish not healthy from the very start.

the first point is pretty obvious...perhaps it may not be you but it could have just arrived from the farm. During this period fish goes through alot of transport shock.

Point number 2 and 3 are related. did you float the bag for 20 mins or so and did you allow 100% mixing of water between the bag and your tank?

if its transport shock, give it sometime and try not to stress it too much by looking all the time

From what I know, puffers tend to have a dark belly when they are stressed up. And resting constantly on the bottom is not a good sign as they are known to be active fishes.

If your puffer is not eating the snails, you can try feeding live blood worms. But I found it a hassle getting 'live' ones as they tend to get 'stale' easily. You can try training them to eat frozen/dried blood worms if you like.

But hard-shelled food such as snails is required to keep their teeth ground down. You need to be careful what kind of snails though because if snails are too hard, the fish may supposedly damage their beaks while trying to bite through. Try crushing one of the snails between your fingers (fingertips not nails), if you can do this, then puffers will have no trouble getting through. If they seem not to understand what the snails are for, you might try dropping in a few crushed ones, just to help them figure out that there's food inside them.

Hope it helps... puffers are cuties!

Some natural SALT is what you need, though it may hurt your plants in the tank.

    I concurs with u.
Take care of your water, and your water will take care of your fish. Clear water may not be clean water. To obtain good water quality, nothing beat water change.

I think your puffer is ok, just needs some adjustment to your tank.
My ex puffer also exhibited the same traits when i was shifting it from one tank to another container. After a couple of days, it began to stabilise.

I hope your puffer is the same situation as mine
