Well, i'm thinking of doin a mangrove setup in a 2ft. Water will be 3/4 full. What kind of CO2 diffusion method is the best for low water tanks? Well, where can i find plants that are partially submerged in water eg. arrowhead?

    Thanks

haha you can go to the tanks section and have a look at my experimental mangrove setup.
one thing i have to say: you need a really huge tank.
if not, there is no way you can fill your tank 3/4 full of water with half the tank dry. takes alot of gravel to get the banks right and i estimate you need a 4ft+ tank. not worth the trouble for a mangrove setup anyway....

Pond plants... like arrowhead, you can get from the nurseries. But expensive as far as aquatic plants go. Try the ones along Thomson Rd and those behind those. Prices vary quite a bit for different size plants.

No CO2 is needed for emersed plants.
Good light, deep CaCO3 based fine substrate, about 10cm deep is good.
Both Red and Black Mangrove will grow in FW or SW etc.
You'll need an open top design for this tank 75-100cm lenght would be a minimum. It'll take a while to get the plants to a good size if rasing from seedlings(1-2 years etc). There are a number of tidal plants you can use also if you want to do a more brackish/SW version.

Skydevil, CO2 is free in the air..LOL [] ....emersed plants take in CO2 from the atmosphere like normal plants unlike aquatic ones where water does not have enough CO2 and needs supplement..
    CaCO3 is calcium carbonate.
Archer fish...interesting..how to provide the insects for them...mmmmmmm...[]

Actually archer fish don't really need insects they can survive with market prawns and such =)

Crickets and grasshoppers from the bird shop. YOu just have to make sure they don't escape before the fishes get them. They might take mealworms too. I considered archerfishes before. One thing I thought of was to leave a piece of fruit hanging to attract fruit flies... not sure if it'll work, and the mess/stench it might cause.

if your tank is near the balcony or something and your light is strong, it will attract lots of insects. be careful with your circuitry because teh archer fish can shot jets of water till very great heights to strike the insects. easily in excess of 1 metre(saw before in a kelong in kukup where the owner held an insect in teh air for teh fish to shoot down, they are damn accurate.

Once your mangrove grows, you can place a few pieces of fruit on the branches and friut flies will be attracted, then you have free meal for the fish.

think AGA website has a mangrove setup which won teh biotope category one or 2 years ago.

Hope this is helpful... and anyway, very nice idea...

    Re: Mangrove Setup

Difficult to feed archer fishes, i have tried flakes, BW but they never eat at all. MP i dunno, may pollute the tank if they dont want. How?
