Will the archerfish sold in aquariums shoot water to hit prey down?

Don't see why not. But I remember reading a book or seeing on TV that they prefer to jump and catch their prey if the prey are within jump range.
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:
A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.

Just make sure they jump within the perimeter of the tank though...or you might get dried archer fish for dinner. [] ...They basically hunt by the movement of objects above the water surface..imagine waving your finger above it and it might well try to shoot it down...woohoo...

Cuz aquarium sold archerfish is captive bred in farms and since fries they have been taking commercial food. So i worry that they might not "shoot"

I read that you could train them. There are two schools of thought of this subject.
    1) Natural ability, it'll shoot anything down, given that theres an insect on a branch above it.
    2) You can jump start the phenomenom by "training" it.
-place dead cricket on water surface
-stick dead cricket on water edge, slightly above the water surface
    - increase height gradually
Theres a picture of a paludarium in age of aquariums, very nice, the owner inverted a plastic tank on top with branches to house the crickets.

they can shoot high and far... so if you have insects flying around the tank often, soon your house will be pretty wet i think...[] [] []

U could use a satay stick with those worms that birdkeeper use 2 feed to. Put it at the edge of the satay stick n hold the stick above the tank. See if the archerfish shoots at it.
If you've learnt, teach, if you have, give.

The archerfish would be aiming for the worm, not the satay stick.

Skydevil, how large is the tank you plan to put the archerfish in?
They are actually a brackish fish, but can survive in freshwater.
They reach 10 - 12 inches, and like to be in groups of 3 or more.
They are best kept in a paludarium, with overhanging branches and water filled only 50%. A 2ft high tank is best, and at least 4ft long. So a 4x2x2 would be good.
Currently keeping many wild betta species and other anabantoids.

Well, i'm doing this partly is for a sch project. So i'll be keeping them in a 2ft with 50-65% water level. Will have mangrove roots hanging over the water and net to cover the top to prevent jumping

they don't shoot either. cos there's a MH overhead and I think its too bright to stare up?
(not that there's anything to stare at).
