Which Eden filter?
As mentioned, for substrate just get plain gravel. These days there are coloured ones. Sometimes labelled as river sand, quartz gravel. The cheap stuff, about 1 to 2 mm grain size.
Just don't get any special soil or gravel for plants.

Using Eden 501.
Don't i have to recycle the tank if i restart my filter media and tank?
p.s: so the bottom line is, don't get any soil if im not going to have any rooted plants? didn't know that.. Is there any soil i can use as substrate that will not decompose if i do not plant rooted plants?

It is quite normal, mine also has the faint "algae" smells. Probably I have too many plants in my tank like jungle. Just do WC to keep the water clean, clean the filter from prolonged shit built-up and have good ventilation at home should cure the "odor". It will go off immediately instead of doing drastic overhaul to your tank.
If you're not intending to grow rooted plants, and want to just use to soil to lower pH, I would recommend going with GEX Shrimp and Plant (Red Packet)
Don't lay it too deep either, 2 cm over the base should be enough.
Eightfold, any live stock inside?
I think it can be solved by using bacteria additive, some of the additive contains bacteria capable of breaking down H2S.
silane
I've restarted the tank today

hi,
as i do not have a secondary tank since i restart the previous tank. i've dump all the livestocks back..
Qns: how do i speed up the cycling process? changing water everyday?
don't change the water at all during cycling.
put in a small piece of market prawn, can use bacteria additives also.
Then just patience, until Ammonia and Nitrites are both 0ppm and you detect only Nitrates.
50% water change after all of that and you're ready to add livestock.
He has no other container, so he already added livestock in. So Fuzzy's option is not viable.
Water change every day will just prolong the process as without letting the ammonia, etc to build up, the bacteria colony takes longer to grow. Plus chlorine and fluctuating water parameters is probably detrimental to some extent on the process.
Suggest you get a product similar to Seachem Prime or AmGuard. Click the links for more info. The main reason I recommend these two is because they reduce ammonia/nium, nitrite, nitrate toxicity while keeping them available for the filter bacteria, hence allowing the colony to grow while protecting your livestock.
Look around the LFS for products that perform similar function.

Yes, poor few shrimps did not make it.
Those bought from CRS Haven still alive tho.. snowballs..
I have Seachem Prime, do i just dose them in the main tank? Every other day?
You should probably dose AmGuard or API Ammo Lock to relieve stress on your livestock.
Prime will do. No need to go get anything else. Follow the instructions to dose.

Ah I didn't notice Prime also binds Ammonia. I usually keep the smallest bottle of Ammo Lock handy, in case of power failures or filter failures.
Thankfully I've not had to use it so far though.
What are some easy growing stem plants, do not want my restarted tank to 'decompose' again..
I've planted some hairgrass and upgraded to 32w t5 lights
Do they need any dosing? I only have soil as substrate.
thanks in adv
