The thought of creating a new guppy strain has always kept me day-dreaming for quite awhile..

I know to improve the line I want to create, I need to get my guppies to breed true.. And of course the random guppies from the LFS don't breed true.. So was wondering if I can get a true breed from them after going through careful selective breeding for many generation..?

It would indeed be a awesome challenge.. But I'd need advice on the above matter first.. So anyone? Thanks in advance..

Fixing a Guppy strain depends on what you want your strain to look like.
I assume you don't mean to begin with a wild type guppy and taking it to your ultimate goal since that took a few human generations to create today's fancy Guppy strains.
It is much easier to begin with established lines of Guppies then combine them to achieve the traits you desire.
It is best to buy your initial breeding stock from Guppy specialists who already have pure breeding strains.
They would be your raw material.
You will need to segregate the sexes of the fry your raw material provides so you can have complete control over which fish are bred together.

If you could describe what your goal is then others could suggest the most promising lines of Guppies to begin your breeding program.
Old fish breeder. SA Dwarf Cichlids, Hypancistrus sp L260, L333 and Peckoltia L134 breeder. Also Sturisoma, Dwarf Corydoras spp, wild Discus and Killiefish. Like breeding Characins and wild Betta spp too.

Re: The thought of creating a guppy strain..

I've been doing such crosses lately too, and in my opinion, there's few way to do it:

    1. Imagine/ vision the type that you want to create
    2. Get 2 pure line breeding guppy strains - which carries the desirable trait that could match your imagination.
    3. Use only virgin females of both strains. Cross with each other; strain A male X strain B female and the opposite
    4. Do the same with the F2, and keep each batch as virgin as possible
    5. Make a backcross to the father/mother of strain A/B which have the trait u want!
    6. Line breed until your line is stabilize.

However, there's the genetic factor, dominant and recessive. Keep and eye on that. And hope you aware that you will need alot... i mean A LOTS of fish tank to do this, and long time.. each gen will take u at least half year to see the full potential/traits.

So there is no way to make a true line out from those random guppies from the LFS?

By the way.. Is there any LFS with a good selection of guppy lines?

it's alot harder to start from LFS random guppies... but u may end up with more surprises! Why not u join the Singapore Guppy Club? You can get alot of pure breeding strain.

does the Singapore Guppy Club get into other livebearers as well?
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.
