ya looks like batik... whats the size of the crab...

hmmm sorry to hijack ur thread but did anyone see a weird looking crab at C328 last week? Its basically black in colour but has like a tribal tattoo greyish design on its carapace. Its a little bit bigger than a fully grown vampire crab but has those freakish crabby eyes that are soooooo elongated they stick out a good deal from its sockets... didnt get to snap a pic with my phone though now i regret it...

It is a batik crab from sulawesi. Requirement is similar to vampires. for the lost claw, not to worry cos it will grow out when it molts. However things to note would be to provide it with plenty of hidding place and a calcium rich diet.

    Dried Anchovies would help greatly.

I fed my red claw, rainbow and orange dried anchovies when they molt.

for calcium just use egg shell and crush them into powder and mix with the food will do.

just make sure that the egg shell has been washed clean before you feed them to the crabs.

Maybe Irmengardia johnsoni but there isn't much to see. The forehead does not to be correct. Else I would have said a freshwater crab of the super family Gecarcinucidae. A freshwater crab is it for sure.

There are no similarities with Metasesarma obesum.

    Re: id this crab

    Hi limz,

this is a parathelphusa spp. from sulawesi. it is a new species, and may be still undescribed. Its body shape is the same as parathelphusa pantherina.

Beastie, i think it is impossible to be Irmengardia johnsoni. johnsoni is endemic to singapore ,and impossible to obtain as it is highly protected, and you would be slapped with a heavy fine and/or jailed if you attempted to catch it.

    Re: id this crab

    Hiho

I know. Yes, a Parathelphusid crab is probable but P. pantherina has prominent teeth on the anterolateral margin – this one seems not to have (but as said, one does not see very much).

If you go to aristocratama.com, you will see a lot of new species of parathelphusa crabs from sulawesi. the crab above looks like the so-called brown panther crab or purple panther crab.

Hmmm, "Brown Panther Crab" is Nautilothelphusa zimmeri – we had one female years ago which was imported with the pantherinas.

Fire crab – Prof. Peter Ng thinks it might be a Holthuisana although I tend to think it is a Terrathelphusa or something like that. We will see. Aquatic plant crab is Limopilos nayianetri, Papua Panther Crab is indeed a new Parathelphusa, Red Panther Cra is P. ferruginea, White Claw Panther Crab is Syntripsa flavichela and Purple Panther Crab is S. matannenis.
