Let us work together to preserve the world for our children to inherit by being responsible to our surroundings. Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints, bubbles and memories.
My tank invades with green long-threaded-hair-algae,
too much fert. I guess, looking for remedy while cutting down my dosage. Yamato helps?
sadie,
i know yamatos, SAE, and otos do the job well.. malayan shrimps also..

That is the problem,
my otos, malayan shrimps and SAE fail to feast these
algae.
wat algae r u fighting? u could be overfeeding yr fishes, thus the algae eaters r not working becoz of that.. to me, different algae eaters do diff jobs.. SAE eat all kinda algae, provided they r starved, Otos good for spotted algae on leaves and glass, malayan? love to hide, more like a savager rather than algae eating
Sadie,
I was looking for this fish some time back as well (for the same reasons I might add)... unfortunately I didn't find them. The good news is that thread algae can be overcome. You need to be very aggresive with dealing with this algae, and remove every little bit you can find (I used a combination of a fork and a toothbrush). At the same time, hold back on fertilization, and do your water changes.
I did this for about 2 months continuously, and the effects was dramatic. Soon my plants began to take over the fight for nutrients, and today, I don't have any thread algae in my tank. SAE's and shrimps will also help, though I suspect they only go for the small tiny threads, I don't know of anything that will eat the long threads...
in short you are the best prevention/cure... be vigilant! you can succeed against this dreaded algae...

p/s if its any consolation, the dupla site says that this form of algae is an indicator of good water conditions...

Hi simon, the aglae look like green string of hair (hair alage). Not BBA.
Allen,
that's really warm to hear )) But to us it's still pain in our neck.
Hi Sadie,
For thread algae, I've discovered that platys and honey gouramis are quite effective. However, I'm not sure if they will fit the aesthetics of your tank.
I've read/heard that the 3 stripe and the 1 stripe pencilfish eat thread algae too. Never tried them though.
Pondering on it, the sucker mouth of fishes like otos and SAEs may not be suitable to consuming long threads.
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.
for hair algae, try yamato, pencilfish, mollies, platy
