bukit merah = one hill of laterite..( when it rains. red water around biotope shop area.)
if you go to any construction site, the red/orangy clay is laterite.

wait near SAF training area, stop soldiers with muddy boots, offer to clean their boots for them, keep the mud, 90% will be laterite

what is the use of Laterite in a plant tank?
use google and search. grr
laterite = iron rich, negative cec
laterite is 'aged' soil. almost devoid of other minerals except for iron.
if the ph of the laterite you are going to use is <5.5 then there will be aluminium toxicity. this applies to terrestrial plants but i believe it applies to aquatic plants as well. addition of lime, caco3, will bring the ph up to safe levels.

actually strictly speaking, isnt laterite the hardened subsurface layer in tropical soil horizons?
so u wont get it in the form of mud of soil..
But anyway, saw these red coloured pebbles at a coastal area (near Desaru) which my geog teacher said were fragments of laterite..Wonder if I could have used those in the tank...
Has anyone used laterite for their base without liquid Fe supplement and yet grow red plants really red?
I used potting soil which I think has a fairly big volume of "Ang Tor" in it yet I need to add Fe and TE. I noticed my Fe falls overtime, and supplement it to 0.5ppm. Could it be possible that although not measureable, the plants can still get them from their roots. And I should try not adding.
ehh
that one hard to say
but i would say it's very plausible for the plants to be able to take in iron through their roots
as for being red, it doesn't just depend on the iron content alone
i don't have a good feeling about laterite
i don't know why
but i'd rather use other ferts which contain all the other nutrients, not only iron
ie jaqno sticks
