mine is standard 2ft tank, using eheim professional 350, flow rate 1050 (but with chiller, all knows this rate is just statistics haha).
using pre-owned Daeil chiller 1/10 (yes, the previous name for Artica chiller)
Watts used: 320 watts
chill temp: 25
kicks in: 26
time to chill: 10-13mins
next kick in: 45-55mins
From your current specs, maybe you could try Artica brand or TECO. It would help you save more in the long run if thats your intention.
I was just doing an estimate on the cycles.
But I do have some better facts now, not sure it is calculated correctly.
Day (assuming 9am - 9pm)
----
Avg time to chill: 1hr 10mins
Holding time till next kick in: 1hr 27mins
1 cycle = 1hr 27mins (87mins) + 1hr 10mins (70mins) = 157mins
1 Daytime = 12hrs (720mins) / 157mins = 4.89 cycles
Night (assuming 9pm - 9am)
-----
Avg time to chill: 59mins
Holding time till next kick in: 1hr 39mins
1 cycle = 1hr 39mins (99mins) + 59mins = 158mins
1 Nighttime = 12hrs (720mins) / 158mins = 4.56 cycles
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Electricity tariff for households is 25.68 cents per kWh
Estimate Day usage: 70mins x 4.89 cycles = 342.3mins = 5.705 hours a day
Estimate Night usage: 59mins x 4.56 cycles = 269.04mins = 4.484 hours a day
Monthly usage charge: ((280w x (5.705+4.484) hours x 30 days) / 1000) x 25.68cents = $ 21.98
Bro, Though we are using similar spec of 1/10 chiller, but your is 2 ft and mine is 3ft tank. I know 1/10hp woudl be stressful to chill a 3ft tank, thus I set the chill temp as 26c.
Frankly Artica or Teco would be out of my budget, and I see no reason to spend 1k on a chiller... I am wondering how your ROI would be as your say it would help me to save more in the long run.
No need to buy branded chiller. Get a higher spec made in china chiller should be enough. With the external temperature modification and ideal pump flowrate, you could be in the sweet spot. Hailea chiller is already good enough in my opinion. I firmly believe made in china product quality standard has risen compared to a few year ago.
We need to find an efficient location for the chiller to operate at its prime level. Placement of chiller is highly important after the modification as the chiller need to expel away the heat it produced. Expelling the heat away from the chiller prevent the chiller from being overworked and also prevent the chiller from retaining the heat on itself. Placing the chiller too close to the wall might cause a whirlpool effect that cause the chiller to suck in the hot air back into circulation.

Rc311, in your case, I would set the temperature to maintain at 27 and kick in at 28. This should increase the length of standby time. You are using an under powered chiller for your tank size.

Hi BFG, agreed. I am stressing the chiller.
the 2nd calculation is more make sense to me, the time for next kick should be similar regardless which chiller HP used
thanks, its really well info!
Hi,
Has anyone good advice on chiller for 4x1.5x1.5 ft tank. It seems the HP calculations depend on the brand type? looking at planted tank (not high tech tho)
What would be your recommendation between Teco and Arctica?
Thank you in advance
Do you on your fan together with your chiller to make your tank cooler?
Or the fan will blow the cold air away.
Bros,
I am using an Arctica 1/10hp chiller with a Eheim Ecco Pro 130 on a 2ft tank. The chiller has 16/22mm hose connectors but my Eheim uses 12/16 hoses, so I use reducing valves for the different size hoses.
Would you recommend me to use a straight 16/22 hose all the way to the lily pipe in the tank and upsize the lily pipe to 16/22 too? Just wondering if this would then stress the Eheim filter.
IF I keep ths set up, would the different size hoses create any problem in future for the filter or the chiller?
You wouldn't be stressing the filter by increasing the hose and pipe size, your current setup using adaptors is okay too... its only if you further reduce the size of the hoses and pipes (smaller than the original filter in/out ports) then it'll restrict and reduce flow.
Only thing with using a larger lily pipe is it may look abit oversized in your tank.

Thanks Aquaria!
Another question - I just bought a 2nd hand arctica 1/10 chiller and although I set the temp to 24, it only shows 24.4 as the lowest, and only moves between 24.4-24.6, and it is still the same after I plug out and plug in... Any concern?
I've not used the arctica brand chillers before, so have to wait for others who use that brand to reply on their experiences.
But to check whether the chiller is doing its job, just use another thermometer to measure the water temperature in the actual tank itself, see if it matches whats shown on the chiller.
What is the most budget chiller in the market?
Right now is Hailea.

Can advise whether teco tr5 can support a 2ft tank??
Any issue with this brand of chiller? ...thx
Hi all, my tank is about 80 Liters I plan to use a prefilter - 2215 - Hailea HS-28A will the flow rate enough for the tank ?
