look like a ball? what is the color? if black, it is BBA (black beard algae). Photo will certainly help.
I think is Cladophora algae, they do form a ball also. Use H2O2 direct inject on them, make sure no current movement before you do that.
No one know what causes such algae appear, it might come with Marimo Ball, even in healthy tank they do appear sometime, it could be the plant that you bring in.

If it's green spiky ball like, just spot inject with excel. But beware your haigrass will melt if overdose.
Marimo ball does not stick to anything, by nature it will become like a ball. SO if it sticking to your hairgrass then it is not marimo.

Haha- I remember the marimo ball will drop some 'spines' and this will grow somewhere else in the tank. It looks similar to the clado 'algae' attack pictures on the net. It sticks to tips of things in some places.
Could be a faulty observation but I didn't notice this growth in my other tanks without the marimo ball.
Not very useful for aquascaping IMO but I was proven wrong. The #2 in IAPLC09 showed good use of it.

Who knows, maybe after IAPLC competition, it has grown to become a cladophora tank, yet people still admire it.
